Paul McKenna's Fear of Flying DVD is brilliant, it made flying bearable for me again. You just listen to it a few times nad it programmes your brain to enjoy the experience - well, not panic through it anyway. Try Amazon.

I know a man whose dad had died in a plane accident, they got the coach to europe every year for a holiday

heQet · 03/02/2010 21:05

channel tunnel and head over to the other side of europe?

saggyhairyarse · 03/02/2010 21:58

You could get the Eurostar and then the TGV to the south of France.

Drive through France, Belgium, Switzerland and you could be at the Italian Adriatic in a day.

From Southampton you could cruise round the Med or the Carribean.

saggyhairyarse · 03/02/2010 21:59

My friend went to Morroco by boat/train/boat.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2010 22:02

At Easter, the south of France is fine. Like 20C or something. We were near Cannes a few years back at easter, it was nice. Warm enough for the pool to tempt.

If you train to the s of france, a) look at seat51.com b) change trains at Calais, not Paris. In Paris you have to take the metro, and it's a faff, in Calais it's a short walk between the terminals.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2010 22:03

Actually, wherever you go, if it's train rather than boat. look at seat61.com (not 51, sorry!)

Francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2010 22:10

Yes, southern france or Liguria in Italy are usually very mild over Easter, sometimes warmer than 20 degrees.

Or boat to northern spain (though not sure how mild northern spain is over easter)

So - your dh is going to live the rest of his life without flying and you and your dc will never be able to fly anywhere with him either?

I think he needs to consider trying to overcome his phobia.

British Airways run a Fear Of Flying Course. I have done it, it worked for me.

CBT is a useful therapy for phobias. I have also had quite a long course of intensive cbt (for another unrelated phobia) and would recommend that.

He could also have valium to get him through a shorthaul flight.

Its a very big shame that you all have to compromise because your dh won't consider trying to get over his phobia.

Kewcumber · 03/02/2010 22:23

cruise around the med or canary islands - either pretty reliable for warm weather in teh summer

MeAndMyMonkey · 03/02/2010 22:36

Eurostar to South of France/Spain?
Not being flippant, but has he tried valium? It hasn't cured my phobia but it totally enables me to fly (quite happily I might add).

Victoria Coren had a fear of flying and went to a counsellor - who was then killed in a plane crash.

Ferry to Santander?

clankypanky · 04/02/2010 09:42

Wow thats fantastic everyone, thank you for all your help, its really given me food for thought. bibbetybobbety...not helpful at all, who made you judgey mc judgey pants. Do you think Ive not tried to help him overcome it, do you think that weve not been over it time and time again. I have accepted that its not going to happen and its not up to you to say that he should be different just because youve done it. Of course we have considered valium etc but what good would that be if the rest of the holiday he were feeling sick about flying home. One day he might do a course but until then (because he takes forever to getting round to do these things) I would like to go away ,this year.

said....thats made me laugh...i'll be sure not to pass that info onto dh!

Article from The Independent. This might be useful. Another useful article

DadInsteadofMum · 04/02/2010 12:30

I am not afraid of flying but always drive to our holiday. I load the card up with absolutely everything the kids might want on holiday. I then drive to wherever we are holidaying, the family follows on via RyanAir/EasyJet after I have arrived.

We can fit more in the car, I have a peasceful journey, the kids have a short journey, the flights often work out cheaper than extra passenger costs on the ferry (except the short channel crossing).

bibbitybobbityhat · 04/02/2010 12:41

Am not judging !?!?!?!?!

Did you read what I actually posted?

Wtf .

clankypanky · 04/02/2010 19:32

Of course I read it and it irritated me, I had posted that it was 100% not an option so what about that did you not get? why would you continue to make comment about my dh not considering trying to get over his phobia? Oh yeah, we hadnt thought of that one. How do you know he hasnt considered it? Its not very nice to assume that about someone you dont know. I wasnt asking how to get him over his fear of flying, I was asking for holiday advice. Sorry if Im overeacting but your post was not sensitive and ignored me which I found patronising. It is a matter that has been discussed a lot and the thought of it makes what is normally the best, most loveliest man in the world turn into someone that broods and wont barely speak.

The ferry to Santander is fab. You get to go through the Bay of Biscay, we saw dolphins. We wouldn't fly either (mainly fear, a bit eco) and have had great holidays in Europe. Enjoy.

clankypanky · 04/02/2010 21:31

that sounds very appealing, ive always wanted to see dolphins, every beach holiday we take im scanning the horizon. thanks x
