Is a copy of a birth certificate o.k for applying for a pass port?

Hi, I need to get my 5 year old daughter her first passport. It says I need to send off my passport and her birth certificate.
I actually lost her original birth certificate. I've looked everywhere but can't find it. I have had to buy a coppy of it. I just wanted to know if they will accept this coppy? There is an entery nomber etc and it's signed by me and the registrar.
I just hope this will be o.k.
Please let me know if you know.

I think that will be fine it's a photocopy without an original signature that would not be acceptable.

I was born abroad, my birth was registered at a British Embassy - you get a copy there, they keep the original but the copy has an original signature. I had no problems getting a passport.

should be fine. but needs to be the full long certificate, not the short one

Oh, thank you. It should be fine then, I hope. I can't believe I've lost the original.

How do I tell if it's long or short? It says her name, date of birth, place of birth, parents names, address and occupations signatures and date of registration.

That's the long one, has parents occupations on it.
