What to do in Dublin for the weekend?

My husband and I are going to Dublin for the weekend. We go quite often so we have been to all the usual places. Does anyone have a recommendation for something a bit diffrent? Would love to do something offbeat and quirky.

I live in Dublin, hmmm, just trying to think of what you may not have already seen. I presume you did the Guinness Storehouse tour & went for a free pint at the top of the Gravity Bar, cool view.

Kilmainham Gaol (Jail) is not too far from here and very interesting, I would highly recommend it.

Dublin Zoo in the Phoenix Park is a good day out, and not far from Kilmainham.

Ghost Bus Tour, never did it but sounds spooky!

Malahide is a lovely little seaside village on the outskirts of Dublin, with a nice Castle & grounds, very pleasant on a sunny day.

A bit further away is a day trip to Co. Wicklow/Glendalough.

Another day trip is to Newgrange in Co. Meath, its 5,000 years old, older than stonehenge!

Those are all fab ideas but I've done them. A friend of mine suggested a cemetary. Would u know which one she is talking about? We are staying at the Merrion, would it be far from there? We usually eat at Patrick Guilbauds but have decided to go to Les Frere Jaques instead. Do you know if this is a good place?

Hi, is your friend talking about the Hugenot Cemetary on Merrion Row? Not far from the Merrion Hotel. Royal Hospital (site of MOMA) is worth a look. Le Frere Jacques has been there for years and has a consistent reputation. Check out www.nch.ie (national concert hall) and see what's on when you're here. Other restaurants worth trying are Fallon & Byrne, l'Ecrivain, Pichet, One Pico and the Trocadero, purely for atmosphere if nothing else. I agree with other poster re Malahide. Lovely village, nice restaurants (Cruzzos on the Marina and Bon Appetit)and you can take the DART.

You could go and visit my Dad in one hospital and my Mum in another????? Because that is what I am doing!!!

Guinness factory? I'm over to see my family for midterm can't wait!! Though dreading the ferry
Glendalough is definitly worth a trip! Sally Gap (also in Wicklow) and Clara Lara Just down the road really good adventure park for 7+year olds!

Yes, it could be the Hugenot Cemetery or perhaps Glasnevin Cemetery. Glasnevin is only a 10-15 min bus ride from the city centre, so very close. They have daily walking tours. Lots of historical Irish figures are buried there - I've never been myself, but always meant to. The website is:
www.glasnevintrust.ie/touristservices/

I haven't been to Les Frere Jacques in years, but they have been there forever so they must be doing something right. L'Ecrivain is very good and defo worth a visit. I agree with Granard re the Trocadero ... the food is not the reason you go here as its quite old-style, just like the restaurant (like stepping back to the fifties or sixties) but it has a great atmosphere on a busy Fri or Sat night, worth a visit if you've never been.

You've been everywhere! BTW, a great site for reviewing restaurants here is: menupages.ie

Showmeheaven · 04/02/2010 18:55

I've never been, but everyone is buried in Glasnevin, so thats probably why your friend recommended it.

Have you been to Collins Barracks ? You probably have I was there a year ago and we were looking at everything. We came to the uniform that Michael Collins was wearing when he was shot. It was in a glass case. I peered round the back of the case and low and behold, blood stains and mud stains (from where he fell) were still on the coat! I thought that was pretty cool.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/02/2010 20:56

No I haven't been there either. That sounds interesting.
We have seen most things. We love Dublin and go as often as we can. Such a beautiful and friendly city.
