depends what you're looking for?
casual / designer ?
my favourite anthropolgie , victoria secret and all the gap brands
the department stores just have soo much , there just no point in my opinion unless you want jeans going to them

otherwise go enjoy the city walk walk walk and eat drink eat drink imo!

I went last November and did lots of shopping, but mostly in well known shops, macys, gap etc.

There was a nice area of shops around Union Square, with a whole foods near by (I love that food store), and there was a great outdoor market there too but that may be a weekend only thing.

Discounted designer clothes - Century 21

Anthropologie as suggested by Hermy.

Bloomingdales for jeans, or just go to e.g. the 7 for all mankind store if you want expensive jeans cheaper than they would be in the UK.

Wander around Soho for other designers.

Walk down 5th Avenue.

When are you going? If it's in the winter, ice skating at Bryant Park (1 block east of Times Square) is fun. Very pretty. Or the Wollman Rink in Central Park.

What kind of places to eat are you looking for? What's your budget?

We stayed right next door to Century 21 - it was always busy, and DH got some bits in there.

My favourite place was Old Navy, cheap and cheerful.

take a bus from the city to jersey gardens outlet its amazing but take a suit case with wheels. it takes about 30 mins to get there and my god will you be in heaven, its all tax free shopping. plus if you take your passport or uk id the info centre will give you a book of further discounts which will save you a fortune. i went two years in a row. go early and i think it closes at 10 pm week days. my sister just came back and had a ball. wish i was going. i lived in ny for a while in 98 and i wish i was there now!!!
enjoy !!

Take your passport with you when you go to Macys' and Bloomingdales. If you visit the customer services desk and show them your nationality you get a free gift (branded holdall bag, keyring, beach towel) and a 15% store discount card.

Duane Reade (SP) the pharmacy has really cheap skincare and perfumes.

Greenwich village has loads of little boutique style shops with really unique items in them and wandering round the area for a day is great fun.

Harry's Bar down in Wall St is a fantastic steakhouse. The cocktails are amazing.

Bar 89 - I think it is on mercer, check out the toilets!

If you are there at the weekend go for Brunch at the Ritz-Carlton down near battery park. The food was delicious and you are overlooking the statue of liberty. I was lucky enough to see Mr Big of SATC fame when I was there.

Have fun.

Absolutely go to Century 21 for bargain designer goods. Locals go here as well as tourists. www.century21deptstores.com/

Also, Daffy's is the same concept, lots of designer names at bargain prices. www.daffys.com/

I would hit those two shops before touching the ones on the high street, personally. The shops listed above are good ones, though.

Food - For a special treat - The River Cafe under Brooklyn Bridge. Really fantastic food with great views - book in advance through Top Table would be my tip since it's not somewhere that you can just turn up off the hoof. We went for the tasting menu - definitely one of the best meals that DH & I have ever had EVER! For a budget breakfast/brunch, we chanced upon Cranberry Deli on 115 W 45th St, New York (Btwn 6th Ave & Broadway) after noticing that a large NY policeman was coming out of it with a bag of food. The food court at the basement of Grand Union Station is OK as well if you're there anyway - especially for pizza slices. Favourite area was Soho for me.

the boathouse restaurant and bar in central park is a lovely place to go for dinner or drinks if the weather is good, food fab and great atmosphere, did feel a bit like a scene from SATC...if you like that kind of thing!

Macys will give you a discount card on presentation of your UK drivers licence or passport. Bloomingdales will also give you a discount card on presentation of same (they don't give away any other freebies).

Would also second Century 21 for cheap designer branded items.

Avoid Abercrombie and Fitch - they make you queue up outside before you enter, its just naff.

Woodbury Common Outlet mall in New York State is well worth a visit; a daily bus service runs from the Port Authority Bus terminal.

BTW if you are planning to use your credit card in the US, do ensure that you inform the credit card co beforehand of your travel plans. If you do not do this your credit card could have a "stop" marker placed on it. Also photo id can be additionally asked for in some stores if paying by credit card.
