Me and dh are going for a well deserved break to London at the end of February.

We are staying close to Russell Sq tube station, and we are going to the Hammersmith Apollo on the friday night.

So looking for somewhere to eat on friday either bloomsbury end or hammersmith end of our journey. We did eat in covent garden last time at Clos Maggiore which was amazing, am tempted to go back there.

Also looking for something fun to do on Saturady. Most of the day will be taken up by shopping (where are Harevy Nicks/Selfridges?).
But am looking for something a bit different to do which wont take up too much time, we did the Eye last time.

Any thoughts would be great thanks

would also really appreciate some advice on the best way to use the tube, would an oyster card or day pass be better, we seemed to spend a fortune last time going here and there by tube

TIA

dh and I had a weekend alone in London last year and we had a great time....

We ate at these two places, not sure if they are local to what you are looking for but I have eaten in quite a few nice places in London so I could recommend a few (Veeraswamy, Hakkasan, The Ritz, Hibiscus .....www.amaya.biz/
www.simpsonsinthestrand.co.uk/knights-bar.php

We also went to see a show one night and visited a casion which was great fun.

During the day we took an open top bus tour and as part of this we did a walking jack the ripper tour. We live quite close to london so visit quite alot but we very rarely do the "tourist" thing and visit the sights so it was alot of fun.

sweetheart · 28/01/2010 11:48

oh and don't use the tube - walk! You'll be surprised how close everything in London actually is and you'll get to take in the sights / atmosphere too!

mosschops30 · 28/01/2010 12:41

we did walk a bit last time, but am not able to walk too far at the moment so just wanted to know what the cheaper tube options were.

I fancied the jack the Ripper tour last time as we saw it advertised, was it the one at Aldgate station you went on?

I live near where you're staying, so here's what I'd suggest - tube/bus for getting to Selfridges and Harvey Nicks. I can't remember we Harvey Nicks is, but Selfridges is on Oxford street, about halfway between Oxford Circus and Bond Street. There are TONS of buses which go from that area to Oxford Street (normally from Theobald's Road/New Oxford Street). There's the 98, 8, 242 ... could go on.

I would recommend getting an Oyster card, and going for pay as you go. Unfortunately there aren't any things like 3 day tickets, but with PAYG, there is a daily limit, so if you do find yourself using tubes and buses a lot, it's capped.

Russell Square is also relatively close to Covent Garden; you can walk there in 10/15 minutes. Tattons Brasserie is nice for drinks/cocktails, as is Freud (on Shaftesbury Avenue), but is VERY tiny and difficult to get into.

Russell Sq. is also VERY near the British Museum, if that's your thing, and the South Bank (again, quick bus rid or 20/30 minute walk, depending on how fast you walk).

I would recommend (for the views) taking the 168, 68 or number 1 bus going to or from South Bank to Russell Square area and sitting on the top deck - you get the best views of Houses of Parliament, London Eye, St Pauls, The Gerkin, all the way to Canary Wharf as you go along Waterloo Bridge.

If you need more ideas, check out Time Out online.

moss we brought bus tour tickets with this company www.theoriginaltour.com/ as part of the tour package they offer various free walking tours. We did they day time jack the ripper tour which started near the tower of london, you meet the tour guide at one of their bus stops and just set off. There were some other tours which we didn't have time to do but I would have liked to and I was too chicken to do the nightime ripper tour.

We also went to london dungeons while we were there which was good fun. And we have previously done Madam tussauds and the eye which were both ok.

We were staying up near Euston so we did tube it a bit. We got 1 day travel cards I think they were about £11 each and we could travel anywhere all day.

I'd love to go to Clos Maggiore by the way - I've been saving it up for our next romantic trip to London!
Harvey Nick and Selfridges are all in Knightsbridge by the way.

sweetheart · 28/01/2010 12:51

whoops - I take it back - not knightsbridge!

ToddlerYears · 28/01/2010 12:52

No, Harvey Nicks is in Knightsbridge
Selfridges is on Oxford Street (Bond Street tube)

agree you should probably get an oyster card (which you can keep for future trips to London) and do pay as you go (which is capped so you never spend more than what you would have done with one day travel card)

ToddlerYears · 28/01/2010 12:53

X posts, sweetheart!

btw - mosschops, Harrods is just down the road from Harvey Nicks

mosschops30 · 28/01/2010 13:14

Are Harrods and Harvey Nics worth the trip or do they have the same stuff as Selfridges, as we will prob have an little wander down oxford street anyway.

Oh Clos Maggiore was out of this world, me and dh soooo didnt belong there but it was a lovely evening. Would it be worth getting off the tube at Covent Garden just to go there on our way to Hammersmith.

The Amaya looks lovely, but is in the other direction for us on the friday evening so sadly no good (and I love indian food).

thanks serenity for your tips, thats great. We did walk from our hotel last time to oxford street and covent garden, it is suprising when youre walking it thats it not that far.

So jack the ripper tour or london dungeons, or maybe just sitting in a pub after shopping and then home to bed

moss if you like the look or amaya and are going to be oxford / regent street area and like Indian food may I recommend www.veeraswamy.com/ it's not the cheapest of places - but like Clos (i suspect having not been there yet) it is well worth it! It's the sister restaurant of amaya, I have eaten in both and the food is amazing!

Harrods etc - depends on how much you are looking to spend on your shopping trip. Dh and I went into harrods once and left pretty quickly to head to places we could afford to shop!

orienteerer · 28/01/2010 13:58

London Duck Tour, book in advance.

dinkystinky · 28/01/2010 14:02

If weather is abit rubbish, how about afternoon tea somewhere swish? They do it at Fortnum & Masons or if you're feeling flash at the Wolseley or anoterh posh hotel.

I'd only do one of Selfridges or Harrods and Harvey Nics (which are v close together) to be honest.

mosschops30 · 28/01/2010 18:24

What a great idea, I looked at afternoon tea last time. Would we have to be dressed up though, as would probably be after shopping!

Ok eateries will have to be either Bloomsbury, Covent Garden or Hammersmith. Basically somewhere along the Picadilly line and close to a tube as we will deffo be tubing it on the friday night.

Think will just do selfridges, not really into department type stores but suppose we have to do one
