train travel to south of France

We're toying with idea of getting train to Montpellier for holiday there, rather than flying. Flights seem to be with Ryannair for complete rip off (£900 for family) or Gatwick so a trek across London, whereas St Pancras is just 30 mins away. The twins are 6. The leg to Lille will be fine but what about the 4 hr bit down to Montpellier? We've not done long train journeys before, and in the car rely on playing games / talking books.

Portable DVD player (with headphones) and a ds each would be a must i think!!! And a pillow each for tehm to encourage sleep! Where are you going? I've just booked Ryanair to Perpignan for August - going to Siblu Bois du valmarie at Argeles sur mer

Look at BA too and Easyjet as they travel to Montpellier I think. Trains are great in France but can you manage all your luggage (as ask as a fellow twin mum!)

last two years i have flown ryan air to montpellier to Siblu site there. I go the end of july or end of august but in school holidays. You can get cheaper flights if you are not tied to weekends and if you are flexible on lenght of stay . one year we did 6 days and another 9 days to get the really cheap flights.

Good point re the luggage. BA no longer fly there, so it's Ryannair / Easyjet or the train. I think we might train it down there and fly home - in that we'd rather be stuck at Montpellier airport in a delay than Gatwick..
