New York accomodation help

Hulababy · 24/01/2010 21:33

As part of our summer holiday we are intending spending 5 nights in NYC.

There will be 5 of us (me, DH and 8y DD; and also PILs).

We want to stay central, in either a reasonably price hotel OR in a self catering apartment/condo.

Will probably be in NY from 26th to 31st July (5 nights).

Does anyone have any recommendations of particular places or websites to consider?

TIA

Anyone been to the Belvedere hotel or the Crowne Plaza?

Frommers

I have their book on NY with Kids which I found really handy.

Hulababy · 25/01/2010 09:41

Thanks. That remind me, we have a couple of NY books from going last year - best go hunt them out.

have you looked on lastminute.com - they often have some good bargain hotels

Katz · 25/01/2010 09:48

search results hopefully

cheapest for everyone £1000

Hulababy · 25/01/2010 09:57

Thanks Katz - yes, lastminute is where I found the Belvedere and Crowne Plaze. Both seem to have good reviews from tripadvisor.

Need to start getting all this booked!

The doubletree hotel in NYC is a suites hotel - good if you've got quite a few kids with you - and easy walk down to Central Park.

Katz · 25/01/2010 10:59

will fish out our new york book too - think that had accomdation idea in it.

Hulababy · 25/01/2010 11:32

dinkystinky - only have the one child, 8y DD, with us. TBH it looked quite expensive relative to others.

Think we might go with the Belvedere as they have some good deals on, unless the NY book has some other ideas.

Need to look for Cape Cod and Boston accomodation next....

Sorry Hulababy - only quickly scanned your original email. My MIL and SIL stayed in one which was like a minisuite with a kitchenette near Times Square which was really good value - cant remember the name of it for my life though.

Boston - we went there a few years ago and got some really good deals in business class hotels via Expedia. May be worth a look on there.

Hulababy · 25/01/2010 11:58

Thanks - will look at expedia in a bit.

Just scanning Cape Cod places now.

we went to belleclaire upper west side. Nice room, good prices, try expedia. Does room service from dineopposite, close to great deli, they expect yoi to use takeout , and small tea/coffee shop close by too.

Short walk to central park, 10 mins to natural history museum, guggenheim etc. I loved it. Like holiday inn, not posh but perfectly nice and very friendly! We had great recommendations from nct equiv group of mums in coffee shop who adored our english accented kidd and spent an hour working out all the best things for us to do! Fab.

My sister lives close to nyc and now uses this hotel for stopovers too.

Hulababy · 27/01/2010 12:41

Will look at expedia.

The Ramada Plaza is lokin our best bet so far.

We stayed at the Millenium Hilton down at Ground Zero when we were there in October.

Its right in the south of the Island, but has great subway links, is walking distance to Staten Island Ferry/Brooklyn Bridge.

We paid £450 for 3 nights for a superior king room, and ended up getting a major upgrade as it was our honeymoon. They have a pool and such like, next door to Century21, and very close to some lovely wee diners. We paid $5 for 2 huge breakfasts one morning We booked using lowcostbeds.com, which had the best rate, and also offered cashback via Quidco

I was a bit dubious as it was so cheap (well compared to some other hotels in NYC), but it got great reviews on tripadvisor. Oh and we had a room overlooking ground zero - no noise at all, and quite amazing to see.

Personally, I would keep an eye on travelzoo for hotel deals in NYC.

Just back today and thought I would feedback.

New York - we stayed in the Doubltree hotel on 51st/Lexington. Was really cnetral and a llovely hotel. And a subway next door.

Boston - stayed at the Westin Boston Harbourfront in the seaport district, about a mile from the centre - nice easy walk. Nce big rooms, lovely airy hote.

Both good choices.
