There are a few who live in Singapore who can be more helpful I'm sure but my suggestions would be: The cable car, Bird park, river cruise, eat an any of the fantastic food halls. Tbc we just booked through the hotel onto an organised tour, were absolutely exhausted and didn't go

We did go to Raffles for a Singapore Sling with ds in tow, he was bored, it was full of business men and lacked the experience it probably would have been if we didn't have a 2.5 year old with us

We spent most of the time at the hotel rooftop pool which although meant we didn't see as much as we should have of Singapore was very nice!

Oooo anyone want to recommend a food hall?

[yum yum yum] emoticon!

Zoo/night safari?

playftseforme · 23/01/2010 20:29

Just seen how that might read after you asked for foodhall suggestions

But they do have a foodhall type eaterie (altho more for tourists than authentic but 'twas v good nonetheless)

Batteryhuman · 23/01/2010 20:32

Night zoo is fab!

Little India for a fish head curry on palm leaf "plates".

Just wander around, its small and accessible.

angel1976 · 24/01/2010 21:25

The zoo and then the night zoo... Don't miss that for sure! If you are short for time, go to the zoo in the later half of the afternoon, have a really nice buffet dinner at the night safari restaurant and then get into the night safari straight after that. I imagine your DS won't last much longer that a ride on the night safari train but it's good fun.

Sentosa... It's like a resort-type island and lots of things to do like underwater world (which is fab, you go on a little walkway under the sea and also touch pools where you can touch sea creatures and also feeding huge turtles!).

For food hall suggestions, there is a shopping centre right in town called Wisma Atria (it's joined to Orchard MRT station - the underground for Singapore) called Food Republic on the third floor and it is my favourite!

I'm a local so ask any questions!

PDR · 26/01/2010 09:10

Underwater world sounds great - will add that to the list as that is a MUST! My DH will love it!

Our DS is a very sleepy boy so you're right, prob a ride on the train and he'll be done so your timings will work well for us - thank you.

MTR in Hong Kong
MRT in Singapore
Very confusing!

angel how is Singapore for shopping? Any good? If so where's a good mall if I can ditch DH and DS? We are staying at the Shangri-La wherever that is....

The Shangri-la is beautiful. It's on the edge of Orchard Road so you can literally walk down to a road with mall after mall after mall after mall... You get the idea! It's a shopaholic's idea of heaven...

BTW, ditch the Underwater World idea in Sentosa... I just heard it is closed for renovation. However, Resorts World in Sentosa has just opened. It's basically a massive theme park with hotels like Disneyworld. Website here. Not everything is opened yet but Universal Studios is. When are you going? We are leaving in a week to go see my parents. Can't wait! We have actually booked to stay in Sentosa for 2D/1N so we can try and do as much in Sentosa in those 2 days...

In terms of specific mall, there's tons of them in Orchard Road itself. Depends on what you want to buy.

Ion Orchard is the newest kid on the block. Very flash shops.

I love Takashimaya. It is MASSIVE and right in the middle of the shopping strip. And lots going on... There's even a Little Ones club.

I also love Vivocity. It's out of town as in Orchard Road but it's fab and it's near Sentosa. There's actually a rooftop water feature that has a wading pool for kiddies to play in and a large open-air playground... And it's MASSIVE too.

God, I am a shopaholic... Blush

angel1976 · 08/08/2010 21:52

P.S. If you are walking from Shangri-la to Orchard Road, don't bother with the first strip of shopping centres you come to, they are rubbish. You need to get to a massive traffic light junction and that's where the good malls start beginning with Ion Orchard... {grin]

PDR · 09/08/2010 14:35

Oh noooooooooooooo not Underwater World :( How long are they closed for? We are coming on 17th October....

I probably want to buy a few baby bits as I will be 20weeks pg when we are there. Some nice outfits etc? Takashimaya has a baby section so maybe start there! Probably won't have much space in our bags for too much as will be on the way home from Australia.

Fab that I can walk to the shops from the hotel - will definately sneak off for a couple of hours!!!!!!!!

17th October... My birthday... Wink I will be going this Sunday for 2.5 weeks (one week in Bali though) so I will let you know when we come back. Hopefully, I can find this thread!

Hmmm... It looks to be still open on their website. Just check with the hotel concierge before you go. I think there is a free courtesy bus that you can take from most of the big hotels from Orchard Road to Sentosa...

If I were you, just get a cab from the hotel to the main bit of Orchard Road. Cabs are really cheap and it will be really hot. Also, the main drag is quite a walk from Shangri-la (maybe 20-25minutes?). You can always catch a bus too.

Anyway, I found this infocard on the Shangri-la website. Can you see where it says MRT station? That's the start of the good stretch and a little further along, you can see Ngee Ann City (that's the giant mall I called Takashimaya even though Takashimaya is only one of the departmental stores there). Takashimaya (the departmental store) has a massive floor full of children's bits (I think it's on the 5th floor?). Lots of local brands but lots of American brands too. Shoes and clothes, that are local brands, are really cheap if that's your kind of thing! Imported and branded stuff (like LV, Mulberry that sort of thing) aren't. Have fun!
