Easyjet - am being a bit thick

But can anyone explain easyjet baggage to me?

It says on the website we are allowed 20kg per person.

If I think this is enough for us, do we need to add the bags on, ie. if we take 4 bags with a combined weight of 100kg between 5 of us, do I need to add 4 bags on and pay 4 * £22 or are we alreay covered for the 100kg so dont need to add any bags??

Think I need to do a A level in baggage policy!!

Erm, not sure - check their maximum bag weight as obviously the baggage handlers have to throw handle it

domesticextremist · 19/01/2010 20:18

No you pay for any hold bags you have dont you?the 20kg each is how much you are allowed after you have paid.

hotpotmama · 19/01/2010 20:20

So we have to pay before we are allowed any weight at all then? Or are we allowed the weight but it can't be in bags?!!

Yes - I should really know this cos am flying with them in Feb but yes I think we have paid for 2 hold bags between 5 of us and are hoping that will do the trick.

hotpotmama · 19/01/2010 20:27

So does that mean you can put 50kg in each bag in theory?

Last summer we flew Easyjet and each had an allowance of 20kg. We were told that it could be distributed unevenly among our 4 bags so DH and I could have had more and the DDs less. None of us needed the full 20kg though in the end and still had too many clothes.

hotpotmama · 19/01/2010 20:49

Mummyofexciteprincesses, did you pay for 4 bags then?

OP posts:
Nefret · 19/01/2010 21:15

You can't put more than 32kg in any oe bag but apart from that you can divide it how you like.

itwasntme · 19/01/2010 21:19

I flew last month with easyjet. We paid for 2 checked in bags (between 4 of us), and as Nefret said, was given a weight allowance of 64kg. It was loads with hand luggage as well.

hotpotmama · 19/01/2010 22:45

Ok thanks for all the replies, is clearer now!

I think a lot of people get confused/caught out by this. I flew out of Gatwick last week and when I was trying to get through to departures I had to battle my way through a large queue which was blocking the way. It was Easyjet passengers queuing up to pay excess baggage charges. There must have been at least 30 of them in the queue.

hotpotmama · 20/01/2010 14:46

Oh really? At least am not the only thick one then!!

OP posts:
Nefret · 20/01/2010 21:05

When I first flew with Easyjet I had no idea what I should be doing either so no, you're not the only one

DadInsteadofMum · 21/01/2010 10:40

Watch out though if flying with RyanAir you are not allowed to pool, so four people with a comnbined luggage allowance of 80kg travelling with 3 x 25kg bags would get hit with 3 * 5kg of excess baggage.

The nights before a RyanAir flight spent bouncing on and off the scales trying to balance the bags out.

upahill · 21/01/2010 10:43

Dad...That is one of the many reasons I will never fly with RyanAir!!

Hulababy · 21/01/2010 10:48

You can't share allowances.

Your bag needs to be no more than 20kgs, else you will pay excess baggage charges on anything above that.

However check out the amount you can take on board. Some are quite high and you may get away with not having to pay for all the bags if you can make good use of your cabin allowance.

When pricing up flights for comparisons I always include the cost of the backage. That way you know if you are really getting a good deal or not.

Hulababy · 21/01/2010 10:50

RyanAir actually have working scales at neighbouring check in booths so you can check your cases before checking in. Loads of people were stood making changes to their cases and cabin luggage last time we flew witht hem. Was quite amusing.

beware too. We found that all the check in scales weigh heavier than scales at home. Lots of people were saying the same. So underpack, don;t go right up to your limit.

upahill - unfortunately live close to Stansted and they are the only airline flying some of the routes I want so have no choice.
