I discovered a new discount supermarket this week, it is part of the Carrefour group and big in Spain apparently.

It is called Dia and has a pretty reasonable selection of both own brand and branded goods, and even some organic ones.

Website here where you can look up where the markets are, and also find the Ed discount markets. Not sure what they are like as I have not tried them yet.

I spent about 120eu today and have enough to feed the family for a week (main meals - turkey breast, turkey crown, roast beef, salmon, hamburgers, faux fillet) plus bread, ham, cheese, brioche, soup, eggs, pasta, sweets, toiletries and washing powder, fruit and veg etc. Some of that was own brand but most was branded goods. I reckon that I would have spent a lot more in a normal supermarket.

The sliced meats were a bit expensive in comparison to other supermarkets but the fresh meat was very reasonable.

Carrefour are also doing a basic range at very low prices.

Hmmm... I went to Ed once and they actually sell Dia stuff. I don't know for pasta etc, but the Dia ham and sausages looked scary.

Hi ML!
Ah didn't realise Ed was part of carrefour - there are a couple here - but one is tiny and they only ever have one till open. Also a lot of their own brand toiletries are the same as those under the 'dm' brand in Austria/Germany and are excellent and good value for money. Am using a dia delicious body lotion for dry skin atm.

OT - what is the cut of beef called that you use to roast?

The ham is not nice ham.

I think it was called Roti de Boef, it was really cheap, only 9eu something. Will try it out.

Still reeling at the amount I pay for food here in Switzerland.

Reporting back on the roti de boef. We had it tonight and it was actually quite good. I only used half of the garlic marinade and put ot in the oven for a bit longer than the 30 minutes specified. Was good, considering it was only 9eu I would say very food value for money.
