So, after the journey from hell that started in California, including plane being diverted from Bristol to Manchester because it had a 'longer runway' , flaps not working, and being met on runway by 10 fire engines, the kids (3 and 22 months) are in a weird time zone.

Went to bed at 20:00, and now they are awake showing zero signs of wanting to go back to sleep.

IME: You'll see significant improvement within 3 days. A full return to normal takes one week.

Keep things quiet in a low-light room during the night, even if they can't actually sleep. Read stories if you can still focus on the print! Make them dull stories... dull stories about how nice sleep is.

It will seem better tomorrow, I promise. Good luck.

Keep them awake as much as possible (avoid the temptation to let them sleep all morning if they finally get to sleep in the small hours) and spend lots of time out in daylight tomorrow, then put them to bed at a reasonably normal time. Sunlight really does help reset body clocks. It will take a few days, but longer if you give in to too much daytime napping.

... I mean awake as much as possible during the day tomorrow, of course - not tonight...

OK, thanks for the advice. Just fed them, and they are watching TV, so the temptation is to keep them up a bit longer so they sleep at least until late morning, but guess that's not a good thing.

I share your pain. Came back from a two-week holiday in the Caribbean on Friday. Although my DS (22 months old) starts calling for bed and milk at 7pm, he doesn't sleep until nearly 9. The upside is that he doesn't rouse until 9am.
