Prague at the end of January - Advice Please

Just how cold can it be ?
Do we need snowboots or would normal chunky boots / croc boots be OK ?

Any other advice about a weekend in Prague would be great e.g. clothing, places to visit, things to be aware of

Definitely cold! I have been about 5 times - summer and winter. We were there for NY once and I packed lots of layers. Cold outside, but restaurants etc tend to be very well heated. They keep pavements etc clear of snow - but worth checking forecast just before you go.

It is a beautiful city. The Old Town Square is gorgeous, plus Mala Strana and the Castle District. How long are you going for? Where are you staying?

We were there just before Christmas and it was very cold indeed. Thick gloves a must-have: dd1 wore suede ones on the first evening there and was frozen. I can recommend thermal socks from M&S too.

We wore normal boots, rather than snow boots - there was just a thin layer of snow on the ground, so we were fine.

The Town Square, the Castle and cathedral and the Observation Tower all great. I also loved the Infant of Prague in the Church Of Our Lady Victorious. Dp liked the Kafka museum but the girls and I didn't go to that.

We walked absolutely everywhere and didn't us epublic transport at all - but we only had two full days there, so stayed around the centre. I have been told that a trip to a place where the Nazis had like a 'model village' for the Jews is well worth it but we didn't have time and I'm afraid I can't remember what it's called.

Sorry - you already said a weekend. Get a map. Start day 1 from Wencelas Square. Go to the Obecni Dum - fantastic Art deco place. Wander through the pedestrian streets to the Old Town Square. You can climb the tower in the Town Hall if you are energetic, or otherwise just look at the Astronomical clock.

Continue your wanderings towards the river and the Charles Bridge, there is a Powder Towe at the beginning you can go up for fab views.

Day 2. Go the other side of the river, explore Mala Strana, and get the Funicular up to the top. Then visit the castle.

I want to come with you!

well atm there is masses of thawing snow and ice so i would recommend something warm, high, waterproof and non sliding. temperatures just about zero so warmer than in the past few weeks when it was freezing up to /or down to/ minus ten.

catepilarr · 21/01/2010 16:31

ok so now it has all frozen again,so perhaps take some skates...
