my DH and I are planning our first trip abroad in April with our by then 11 month old DD. I will also be 6 months pregnant. We'd like to go self catering in a place near/by the sea that has plenty of restaurants, character and beautiful scenery, preferably without masses of tourists or a heaving night life, where we don't necessarily need to get in a car. Any ideas? We'd like a short flight only so Spain/Italy/Greece appeal.

Sifnos in the Greek Cyclades. You fly to Athens and then take the bus to Piraeus where you can get the hovercraft. The island has no airport so not many tourists. It is magical.

You can stay on the beach in either Vathi, Faros or Kamares or you can stay in the main town, Apollonia which has a main drag (no cars) filled with tavernas. There is a very good bus service on the island so no need for a car.

Antibes or Villefranche Sur Mer. Le Lavandou is very nice too.

St. Florent in northern Corsica is still pretty traditional (at least it was in 2000 when I went there) and must be like the places on the French mainland were back in the day. Try [http://www.corsica.co.uk Corsican Places]] for self-catering (actually I see there's a review of one of them from HelenMumsnet on here, but that sleeps 9 - there are several that sleep fewer, though).

sorry, Corsican Places.

alternatively you can stay in Ile Rousse, from where there's a little train that takes you into the interior of the island - an amazing trip and definitely some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen.

Ile Rousse is probably handier for beaches, too (and the little train passes others, as I remember). Probably a better option if you don't have a car, although I did like St. Florent - more of a small port feel.

there were also good walks from St. Florent - easy to get out of on foot, and probably more varied scenery in the immediate vicinity than Ile Rousse. Lovely view of the hills on the other side of the port as well.
