we've got the chance to go away the first week in march - its dh's 40th - and the GP's will look after our dc!! too excited but now not sure where to go!

should we try for a sunshine holiday - think that would only be the canaries for a short trip (it might only be 5 or 6 nights) or should we go skiing or ?????

any ideas?

Depends what you like doing - personally I'd prefer a city break

Shoshe · 13/01/2010 07:28

We just went on a adult only (well over 10, but the youngest person was about 16) cruise down the Nile, it was fantastic, would recommend to anybody.

MmeLindt · 13/01/2010 07:31

Rome.

Couple of days in Rome then hire a car and go down the Amalfi coast to Positano and Amalfi.

DelGirl · 13/01/2010 07:46

I heart Positano . Only a few more months and I shall be able to drive there for a weekend break yay

domesticextremist · 13/01/2010 07:47

venice...mmm

domesticextremist · 13/01/2010 07:47

in fact venice and then the train to florence...

These Italian ideas seem appealing - we're in Germany so i'm sure we could drive but not sure i could be arsed with the hassle of italian drivers!! but we're not that far from an airport! what would the weather be like at that time of year? Like Britain?

Think we had thought of a sunshine break initially cause dh is knackered and would benefit from the rest but for only 5 or 6 nights i dont want to go very far so we'd be limited to where there would be sunshine in march.

as for skiing - i like skiing but i'm not the best at it and dh is rubbish at downhill skiing. I like cross country skiing but it is no rest!!

will put the italy ideas to him! Thanks

In March, Positano and Rome would be warmish wouldnt they? Definately enough for coffee on a balcony I reckon.

Congratulations, it's well worth it for recharging the batteries. We've managed it twice - once for 3 days and once for 4. The first time we went to Rome, and the second time to Barcelona. Barcelona was in November, and it was great to be able to sit outside in the sun while everyone else was freezing back home. We used EasyJet for both trips. A city break is good because you can combine lots of different holidays in a short time - culture, cafes, beach nearby, and in Barcelona there's the Mango outlet for some seriously cheap shopping

BlauerEngel · 13/01/2010 08:09

Ah, you're in Germany, Canella. We flew with EasyJet from Berlin, where there is a big hub. If you're in Munich or somewhere equally southern you can get to Tuscany in about 7 hours driving time, but it's hardly relaxing is it, spending two days of your precious time driving. On our trips we needed only 6 hours door to door, home to hotel, and in both cases we arrived at 11am the day we travelled, which essentially gave us an extra day.

canella · 13/01/2010 08:21

we're in the north of bavaria - in the Rhoen!!! so not exactly dead handy for airports but we can be in Nuremburg (?sp) or Frankfurt in 2 hours.

Just happily wasting the morning surfing the internet looking at all these ideas - thanks ladies! we so need a break without the children and the normal stresses of life and since they've offered to look after the dc i'm biting their hand off!! when dh comes home tonight i'll have a squillion different options for him!!

Canella
Check out Lufthasa, they do some good deals to Rome. Or Ryanair, from Hahn. It is a bit further for you to drive though. German Wings are good but then you would have to go to Cologne/Stuttgart to get a direct flight.

Actually, just had a look at Alitalia, you could get a flight from Frankfurt to Rome for just under 200? for both of you at the beginning of March.

canella · 13/01/2010 08:46

thanks for that mme lindt!! those alitalia flights are really cheap!!

hope dh is impressed with all the info i'll have for him later! (or maybe he'll wonder why i've done no housework and there's no shopping in!!)

Sorry, Canella, I don't as we have never done a package holiday. I prefer to book flights and hotel separately.

We stayed in a lovely hotel in Amalfi that I can recommend. Will have a look adn see if I can find it.

MmeLindt · 13/01/2010 08:57

here

We stayed in Il Conte.

very friendly staff, clean and well decorated rooms, good breakfast. Sadly not on the terrace as it was not warm enough.

canella · 13/01/2010 09:01

team edward - thats how i feel too!! but it is only the 2nd time in 8 years so i'm determined to make it happen!!
