Anyone took a loved ones ashes abroad with them

we fly out to oz on monday and are planning on taking my dads ashes
a while ago i vcheck at the travel agents and they rang ethiad to ask and i was told i could put them in with my luggage and didnt need to declare them
im now having a panic as i dont want to get to the airport and end up leaving him behind they d idnt say i needed any papaerwork or anything
has anyone taken any abroad

Haven't done it personally, but this topic has come up several times to my knowledge on the Merry Widow discussion board. The board is here - I'm afraid it doesn't seem to work when I try to link to the results of the search I did, but if you put 'ashes airline' or some other relevant keywords into the search box, you should find some useful messages. Looks like you will need some paperwork.

i rang the airline again this morning to check and they said i can take them as hand luggage or in my main luggage and that no paperwork was needed its very hard to judge what to do i may just take the death certificate with me in case

I'd definitely take the death certificate; some of the posts on the Merry Widow board also mentioned the cremation certificate - do you have that? Probably a bit late if you don't, if you're travelling on Monday. Hope you get through smoothly.
