Bavaria/Austria - Chiemsee? Achensee?

Tegernsee?

Have decided we are going to spend some time around fussen area but then want to move over and see a different area of the alps.

So any suggestions? Think we would like to be near a lake as they all look so pretty, but which is a good one for things to do, especially for the kids?

No idea, but you reminded me of this song

Do you speak a bit of German, it is a very funny song.

VOM TEGERNSEE ZUM SCHIMPANSEE
Musik: Werner Meier
Text: Margit Sarholz

Du, Hiase, du warst doch scho amoi am Schliersee, oder?
Ja, der is schee!
Und der Chiemsee
und der Tegernsee,
de san a schee.
Und der Gardasee
und der Ammersee,
der Wolfgangsee,
ja, und der Plattensee...
Ja, du meinst ja wohl Glatze(e)!
Ja, der is a schee.
Ja, und dann noch der Nordsee.
Ja, und der Ostsee
und der Südsee.
Ja, die san erst schee!

Aber mir bleib?n heuer
am Wiflinger Weiher.
Weil do is a schee... so schee!

Und net so teuer?
In Berlin ist der Wannsee.
Aber wo ist der Wo-See?
Und wieso gibt?s keinen Wie-See?
Aber i bin der Hier-See! Mei, Hiase!
Die Starnberger ham an Starnberger See.
Und mei Opa hot an Glatze(e).
Und mei Bett hot an Matratze(e).
Und in Afrika ham?s an Victoriasee
und an Schimpanse(e).
Und der Nase(e).
Hey, liegt der Nase(e) net weit vom Fernseh?
Und der Meis(e) und der Reise(e)
und der Schei..., hey!
Und der Pipi-Kaka-See. Titikakasee!

Aber mir bleib?n heuer?

Der Geldbörse(e)
und der Badehose(e),
der Sommersprosse(e)
und der Küsse(e).
Der Lakritze(e)
und der Bleistift-Spitzingsee,
der Käsefüße(e),
der Autositze(e)
und der Kopfstütze(e).
Na, die san schee!
Der Brause(e), der Pause(e), der Zuhause(e)
und der Stausee.
Und der Kartoffelklöße(e)
und der Bratensoße(e).
Hey, der blöde Witze(e),
der Sei-kein-Angsthase(e)
Und der Ja-Du-Hornochse(e)!
Aber mir bleib?n heuer?

Achensee is beuatiful and they do have a Kinderhotel (quite pricy though). How old are the children? Achensee has a steam train and steamers on the lake that they might like, and cable cars even in the summer so you can do high level walks without tiring your legs out too much.

hotpotmama · 07/01/2010 21:11

Clean, I have 3 DS's, they will be 7,6 and 2. Achensee sounds lovely, good to hear from someone who has been. Thanks.

I asked because Achensee is the setting (=Tiernsee in the books) of the Chalet School series - probably not top of the reading list for your boys!

OpheliaPain · 08/01/2010 11:33

hotpotmama · 08/01/2010 15:41

Sorry, not even heard of it, Clean, more horrid henry types!!

We went to Achensee in summer 08, stayed at the kinderhotel.

It was beautiful but it rained (seriously, not drizzle) 7/10 days, we were pestered constantly by horseflies so even on the days when it was not raining being outside in the pool (pond) with dc was not fun, the cable cars were not running (came back with hard gluts though) we did the steam train - it leaked and we came back soaked, and the lake trip - we were stuck in the middle of the worst lightening storm I have ever seen!

We just accepted that all activities would result in us being wet and/or cold.

On the plus side the kinderhotel had great indoor pools, a lovely spa inc childrens spa (which my dd loved) but imho the childrens club was only suitable for very outgoing indedpendet dc.

Kiwinyc · 08/01/2010 22:58

I have no idea where those other places are in the Alps are but we spent 2 wks in the summer near Zell am See and there was HEAPS to do with the children (3 & 6). Really lovely area and lots of days trips within an hours drive - Krimml Falls, Werfen Castle, the High Alpine Dams above Kaprun, Gorge Walk, renting boats on the Zell. summer tobogganing and visiting a Salt Mine and visiting Salzburg. We filled up the time easily.

Weather was lovely (not too hot) interspersed every 3-4 days by a rainy morning or afternoon or evening but fine again the next day. (Typical weather in the mountains really)

hotpotmama · 09/01/2010 17:13

I really want to go but all the farm holiday places that look nice are already booked hence why I am looking at the smaller lakes and accomodation by them.

Would love to stay in a kinderhotel but whenever I look at the prices it looks like it would cost at least 400 euros a night for all 5 of us, unless I am completely misreading it. Is it really that expensive?

We went to the Achensee and had a great time see this thread.

Good song Mme Lindt!

hotpotmama · 09/01/2010 22:08

Ok, I have emailed about 4 places now that look nice after many evenings of searching and they are all full in August.

Have I left it too late to find accomodation for August and should I book now for 2011? I didn't think it would be so hard to find available accomodation, all we want is a nice apartment in a nice area!!

There was a thread recently about holidaying in Germany, I posted some links there. Will see if I can find it. Were some lovely farms.

The recession has hit Germany so it is possible that more Germans than usual are holidaying at home.

Orphelia
If you can, get a hold of the CD. It is fab. We were listening to it today, DCs LOVE Nackedei and Wir wollen alle in die Suppe.

MmeLindt · 09/01/2010 22:15

This one looked fab

Website for farms

This was the thread that I posted on

hotpotmama · 09/01/2010 22:16

It was probably my thread! I think I have missed the boat. Just don't want to book flights until I can find somewhere we can stay!

LOL so it is. Sorry. I never noticed.

I have a friend who lives not far from Chiemsee, I can ask her if she knows anywhere that might still be free.

MmeLindt · 09/01/2010 22:25

Try this website

MmeLindt · 09/01/2010 22:30

This one is in German but it is for selfcatering accommodation

MmeLindt · 09/01/2010 22:33

Another one in German

hotpotmama · 11/01/2010 14:03

Aah thanks Mmelindt, you are very kind. Will have a look on those websites properly later.

The first one does look fab but it is quite a way from Munich. I will have another look on google and work out the drive.

Tegernsee has the best beer.

nighbynight · 11/01/2010 14:57

Tegernsee and Chiemsee are both fab. As is Schliersee, also in the same area.
If you have a car, there is LOADS to do within an hour's drive.
(we live in the area)

private zoo at Ebbs
summer rodelbahn at Oberaudorf
Schloss at Kufstein
Loads of mountains in the Inn valley
Loads of Badeseen (try one just off the Landstrasse near Niederaudorf)
Therme (spa) at Bad Aibling, Bad Reichenhall
Small animal zoo at Blindham
Freibade (open air swimming pools)good ones at Bad Aibling, Bad Feilnbach, there is one without chlorine at Glonn.
Brilliant Hallenbad (covere swimming pool )with humungous waterslide at Ottobrunn
Check the local towns for things happening, eg open air music festivals, races, vintage car rallies, car boot sales (you will find local stuff like pewter, and paintings of the Alps, very cheap)
Konigssee, further down the A8 is a fantastic place, very atmospheric and slightly creepy as is where the nazis had their summer hol houses.
Berchtesgadenland salt mine for a wet day - you can go right into the mountain.
There is a salt walk at Bad Reichenhall, which we havnet yet visited.
Wendelstein Seilbahn, you go up the mountain in a cable car.
I have got a whole folder full of leaflets for chocolate factories, feed-the-sheep farms, riding stables, cheese factories etc.

hotpotmama · 11/01/2010 20:30

Thanks Nightbynight, are you a local or an expat? (Tell me to stop being nosey if you like!) I will be gutted if I can't get there this summer because I can't find somewhere for us to stay, I must try harder now.

Do you know of any good holiday apartments then if you live there? Or are they all booked up like everywhere else I've tried.
