Foldable car seat?

Hi, we are moving to Singapore in the new year and I'm looking for a foldable car seat for my DD who will be 9mo at the time of the move. I need it to use in taxis when we are in Singapore. Specifically, I'd like a seat that is easy to carry, folds into a backpack and reaches relevant safety standards - something like this would be ideal but I can't seem to find them in the UK.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

i would hazard a guess that you can't find them because they maybe don't meet safety standards? not sure how safe something that folds up would be in an accident??

they don't meet eu safety standard which is why they aren't sold in europe. Besides which, your dd should still be rear facing at that sort of age, especially if she's under 9kg.

Damn, yes you're both right . I've been told it is common practice (and legally acceptable) there to just jump in the taxi and hold your baby, which I'm not keen on and I was seeking options. Other than carting a standard car seat around which is looking more likely!

if she's only 9 months she should still fit in her infant carrier, which is less to lug around than a big car seat (though still not great obviously)

how much will you be using taxis?
If it's a lot would it be much more expensive to arrange for a car and driver so you could leave your own seat in it (or at least in the boot if he is doing other jobs)?

just a thought.

(and remember it is legally acceptable and common practice to have babies on laps in taxis in the UK too...)

How heavy s your DD ? Is she even big enough for Group 1. I would agree keep her in her Group 0 baby carrier for as long as possible. When you do move her you could get a Group 123, I have bought one as a spare and to take abroad, it doesnt 'fold' as such but the high back part can be detached from the booster bit (sort of hinged) and folded so its more or less flat not L shaped. The 5 point harness is still in place as DS is only 13kg. I am not sure if all 1-2-3's are like this.

this is the one I bought

Thanks everyone. I'll look into all of the above suggestions. The car/driver option might work given that taxis etc are cheap there. DD is quite long for her age (and therefore heavier) so we might be moving into Group 1 ahead of time anyway but either way, eventually the carseats she'll require won't be easy to lug around a mall etc with a stroller so I will have to find something more "permanent" re this type of arrangement. Thanks again!

I think the seat on the link is a great product, I wonder if it would ever pass safety standards here? It is pic rear facing as well.

We had a similar problem in Hong Kong. Many people there used to have airline style extension belts that they would use or something like this www.joey-safe.com/. It would be an idea to post the question on one of the expat discussion boards. When we were going on holiday we noticed a couple with a maxicosi grp1 carseat attached to something that made it into a stroller it was called gogo kidz travelmate - not sure how practical it will be for everyday use, but may be an option.
