Have you stayed anywhere in Bavaria or Salzburg (yes I know its not Germany)that you would recommend for a family of 5 (3 DS's who will be 7,6 and 2 next summer)?

We want to do 2 weeks in Bavaria/ Salzburg and I am after recommendations for accomodation and also great places to visit.

We love outdoor stuff and need space!

am also interested, so bumping for you. We did Eurocamp in the Black Forest a couple of years ago, might try them again in Bavaria but interested to hear of other suggestions too.

Lilymaid · 14/12/2009 12:01

Berchtesgaden (apologies for spelling if incorrect) is very nice - by mountains and lake and only a short bus ride from Salzburg.

Kiwinyc · 14/12/2009 12:42

Yes, stayed in Kaprun (near Zell am See) with Esprit this Summer, the first two weeks of Aug. Its about 45mins from Salzburg. Weather in the mountains is v. changeable so as long as you realise it will rain some of the time you're fine. The area is just lovely, we did lots of daytrips all over the place, Salzburg, Werfen Castle, Salt Mines, high alpine dams, the Krimml Falls (highest waterfall in Europe), summer toboggoning, etc and lots of walks in the mountains. It was great - soooo much to do and its not too hot.

Really recommend it as a change from a beach holiday.

this thread just caught my eye! yes, would definately recommend Bavaria for a holiday with children. We went last October with DS (18mo at the time) and we loved it. I want to go back!

We stayed at the 3 star NH Munchen Hotel (it's a Dutch chain), clean rooms, spotless and buffet breakfast.
Frequent buses into the city centre, or there's the U Bahn close by aswell. Nice price all in for 7 day stay.

Next stop for us when visiting Germany in the future will be Black Forest region....ooh can't wait!

lovechoc · 14/12/2009 13:01

We went to the Englisch Garten, Jewish Museum, Deep Sea World, Munich Animal Park and a few other things that I can't remember now, but you will not be stuck for things to do. The Tourist Board are brilliant and will give you a free map of the city, and any other leaflets that may interest you.

We also took a day trip to Salzbury, took about 2 hours.

Oh and we also did the Neuschwanstein Castle tour. amazing!

lovechoc · 14/12/2009 13:02

oops that's mean to be Salzburg!

hotpotmama · 14/12/2009 13:08

Wow, all these posts, there were none when I logged off last night, thanks all!!

Was looking at farm holidays where you rent an apartment, they look good for the kids, with the play areas and the animals. Anyone ever done that?

Definitely want to do Salzburg and the sound of music castle if possible and Neuschwanstein. I have been to Bavaria and Salzburg many moons ago as a child, but we stayed in a caravan then and would rather get an apartment or hotel.

Where was the summer toboganning, Kiwi?

Will look up Berchtesgaden, lilymaid, thanks.

We did Zell am See this August and had a brilliant time. Stayed in a hotel but it had a large garden, trampoline for the children, toys and a small petting zoo.

We did most of what Kiwi did. Though we must have gone just as she came back. Had fantastic weather with the occasional brilliant storm (mainly in the evening). They also had the village events on every Wednesday which were great fun.

We went with Thomson lakes and did some of the excursions with them. Dd came back totally idolising one of the reps they use for trips (not a thomson rep. Did Berchtesgarden/Eagles nest/salt mines with them etc.

One of the best holidays we have done. DD now has her poles for mountain walking and loved it. We were literally outdoors all the time.

hotpotmama · 14/12/2009 14:51

Sushi, did you go for 1 or 2 weeks? What was the name of your hotel. Would you recommend it?

Thanks

We went for 10 days and stayed at the Hotel Stadt Wien. It is out of Zell a bit - about 5/10 min walk up the hill. But it meant it was very quiet at night.

The service we got from everyone who worked there was brilliant. Would go back like a shot. Bit the most luxurious hotel but we loved it there.

The bbq night food is not so good bit but dh still managed to gain some weight even with all the walking we did.

It is the first time we have all come back from a holiday wanting to go back.

hotpotmama · 14/12/2009 21:05

How many kids do you have, Sushi? I think its hard to find a hotel room that sleeps 5 thats all.

We're going to Zell am See next week - can't wait! We're staying at the Hotel Hagleitner - its part of the Kinderhotel chains. We've been there before in the summer and had a fab time!

In Germany, definately visit Schloss Neuschwanstein - it really is beautiful! The whole region South of Munich is very pretty.

Sushiqueen · 15/12/2009 08:47

Have one 7 year old. There were a lot of families staying there. They do have some split level rooms which sleep up to 6. Not sure how much they cost though.

You can book the hotel direct if you prefer to make your own way there. A lot of people did as they drive/hired cars etc.

MmeLindt · 15/12/2009 08:56

Another vote for Bechtesgardener Land, it is very pretty there.

There are lots of places offering 'Ferien auf dem Bauernhof' - holidays on farms. I found this website, by googling ferien bauernhof bechtesgarden. This looks lovely

This website is very extensive (and available in English)

MmeLindt · 15/12/2009 08:58

oops, messed up the link. Should have been the link to the homepage of the lovely farm

lovechoc · 15/12/2009 11:25

I'm a huge fan of Munich and that's where we stayed when we visited Germany. I wouldn't really think of staying anywhere else as it's so central.

Definately you have to see Neuschwanstein.

hulabula · 15/12/2009 12:15

We've stayed at this hotel before when our kids were 6 and 4 and had a fab time. Not in Salzburg but within an hours drive.

hotpotmama · 15/12/2009 22:37

Wow love the farm, mmelindt! Want to go now!!

Have looked at the kinderhotels website but think they are a bit too pricey for us in the summer holidays. Look fab tho.

We stayed in an apartment on a farm near the Chiemsee when our twins were very young.
Lovely location almost midway between Munich and Salzburg.

If I can find the name of it I'll post - we had a spotless large 2 bedroom apartment with balcony.

hotpotmama · 16/12/2009 13:28

Ah thanks badpups, did you not get stressed by the balcony. My youngest will be 2 when we go and balconies make me so uneasy.

The Summer Tobogganing we went to was at Saalfelden, about 20 mins from Kaprun. They have a 1.6km run from the top of a (rather slow) chairlift to the top! It was really fun, but doesn't run if its raining. There are several around the area, theres one (further west I think) thats on some sort of monorail thingy?!
