Luggage Allowance - Seperate Tickets

Wondered if anyone has any knowledge on this...

I'm flying in January from Miami to Frankfurt on one ticket, have an 18 hour layover and then fly from Frankfurt to Perth on another ticket. Can I check my luggage all the way through from Miami to Perth? And then claim the 2x23kg bag allowance?

Initially I was flying Miami to Dusseldorf, catching the train to Frankfurt and then flying to Perth so it was a non issue, our flights have now been changed so now I can't help but hope I can check an extra bag and buy more while in the US.

cor what a long couple of days you will have

what is the luggage allowance on those flights? if it is 1x23kg then that's all you'll be allowed to check in I would imagine or are you saying that on the second leg, the allowance becomes 2x23kg?

are you flying the same airline or swapping?

tbh, I tend to only ever take hand luggage but on the odd ocassion I've had connecting flights, I've always checked mine out and back in again. Every time I've transitted luggage, it's got lost (but this was a while ago), so I've just stopped doing it!

If you are flying with the same airline, I'd be a bit more hopeful about it working though.

Different airlines, Miami to Frankfurt on Delta, Frankfurt to Perth on Qantas. I have no choice but to check my bag/s, I'm in Miami for a 3 week holiday and then moving back to Perth after living for 8 years in Europe.

The luggage allowance from Miami to Frankfurt is 2x23kg bags, Frankfurt to Perth is 1x 20kg bag. Hence why being able to check my bags all the way through and using the 2x23kg bag allowance all the way through would make life a hell of alot easier.

Last year I flew Perth to Singapore on one ticket (with Qantas) and Singapore to Geneva on another ticket (Lufthansa) and checked my bags straight through but the allowance was the same, didnt have any problems and had a 10 hour layover in Singapore.

Yup, its going to be a long couple of days, have booked a hotel at the airport in Frankfurt for the layover for a chance to sleep and have a shower.

aussieinde,

Many airlines have very different rules about baggage allowances. Apart from class travelled the final destination also has a bearing on baggage allowance permitted.

I would be speaking to both Qantas and Delta before travel about your actual baggage allowance. You also need to establish in advance whether Delta will check your bags through to Perth or whether you will need to collect at Frankfurt. My guess is that you will have to collect your bag at Frankfurt particularly if these two airlines are not part of the same "world alliance" that some airlines are joined up to.

Good luck!

good luck, good idea about the hotel!

I would call Delta. I guess it depends how fussy they are and how packed that flight is (whether they let you take 2 bags!).

I expect you will have to collect (or, at least, identify) your bags and re-check for transit, but if the airlines have an alliance you should be able to check them straight through. I agree with Attila about contacting both airlines. Make sure you get an email confirming their policy re the extra bag in case you have trouble en route.

Sounds like an absolutely horrendous journey - you're very sensible to stop over in a hotel.

Delta and Qantas are in different alliances but that shouldn't impact the check through, e.g the Qanta Lufthansa example and I have done it with BA/US (but they lost the luggage) and with BA/AA (and they lost the luggage) but you might not wat to check your baggage straight through.

In the last 6 months most airlines have become really tight on excess baggage. so what would have gone through on a nod and a smile from the check in staff will now be charged, bear in mind that excess baggage paid in advance is usually cheaper than paid for at the airport.
