Car seat in Long haul flight???

We are flying longhaul to Singapore with Singapore Airlines with our 2 year old daughter in 2 weeks time. Its an evening flight departing H'row at 1830hrs. We plan to take our car seat on board as she has always slept very well in it during our car trips. Has anyone done this before? Also the practicalities of carrying a car seat within terminals once we clear security. Can't remember if there are trolleys in the duty free section. Any advice, thoughts?

All I remember re car seats was to bear in mind that it pushes the child up and forwards - we went to America a few years ago and dd's feet were almost on the seat in front and it was tight to eat as the flip down tray didn't go quite flat. She was in a duo isofix seat.

I would ask the airline about their policy on car seats. It will also need to fit within the aircraft seat as well.

Personally I would not bother using it for this purpose, its too much hassle as well to carry it through Heathrow.

Once through security as well airport trolleys are few and far between.

I am using a car seat in a plane to go to SA in Jan for my 18month old (Atilla how would you keep a toddler in a plane seat?). I am considering buying one of these with some rope/bungee cord to get it thru the airport.

But do check with your airline the space restrictions.

Shoshe · 17/11/2009 07:43

We had one of these Brillant things, made it so much easier.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 17/11/2009 07:46

Check with the airlines as some do 'car type seats' now so you might not have to. Although the ones BA did were ok, they could not be adjusted to tip for sleeping.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 17/11/2009 07:47

Pavlov they also have a 15Kg weight restriction.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 17/11/2009 07:50

do they? for the britax ones? I am not meaning the ones that go on the bulkhead seats...BA do a proper car seat type one for kids over 2yo. Just like a normal car seat.

you were right libra, well it is 20kg, and it was Virgin not BA!

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 17/11/2009 07:59

Will have another look at BA and see if they have provided anything new in the last 2 months since I booked my ticket but for my very heavy 18month old the only option (apart from weight watchers) was to take my own car seat (and pay a childs fare for the seat). I also won't be able to get the priority seating allocation as even tho the child is under 2 I have paid for a seat for them!
The motto is don't have a large baby and fly BA.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 17/11/2009 08:11

libra that sucks! You should get priority booking with a little one regardless...in fact, more so seeing as you have paid full fare!

"Look at www.gogobabyz.com/product-i14550-c26-gogo_Kidz_Travelmate_.aspx"

I am considering buying one of these for traveling with my 2yo and newborn. I can carry newborn in a sling and strap the 2yo in his car seat.

HappyBump · 17/11/2009 08:16

hmm .. just can't seem to do the links ...

but isn't that one "just" a luggage carrier ... or have I been duped by the marketing of the other one to believe that it will be safer/more secure/better for my PFB to have the more expensive one?

HappyBump · 17/11/2009 09:16

oops, just realised I clicked on Libras link

great, will look at other place to purchase.
Thanks

HappyBump · 17/11/2009 09:46

oh dear ... tried to get the TWK website to ship it to where I live in the Middle East and the price was $181 shipping I don't think I will be ordering from them.

Hopefully I can persuade a relative to bring pick one up and bring over for me.

EldonAve · 17/11/2009 09:48

I agree with Attila and wouldn't take a car seat onboard if I could possibly avoid it

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 17/11/2009 11:17

But what's the alternative to a car seat?

HappyBump · 17/11/2009 11:30

I noticed on the weblink that Shoshe posted that there is a harness by CARES that is supposed to be safety approved.

Otherwise the alternative is, take nothing and keep your fingers crossed they will sit in their seat/fall asleep on you. I've not taken a car seat before and it has been okay (not terrible but not easy either) but I think if I can find the trolley thing I will in future. We take a lot of longhaul flights so I think it will be money well spent.

MistletoeNoelPresents · 17/11/2009 11:37

I used a long scarf and wrapped it around the front of the child and round the seat back, it sat between the bottom of the tray table and the magazine pouch so didn't inconvienence the passenger behind and it meant the child stayed supported when she fell asleep, we also had 2 neck cushionsand when she fell asleep we positioned them so instead of having them behind her neck we had them running along side her body tucked into the scarf from waist to above shoulder so her head and body were supported.

EldonAve · 17/11/2009 11:41

If they are over 2 you don't need the car seat
Under 2 varies on the airline some will give you a car seat like item
Otherwise you have to sit them on your lap when the seatbelt sign is on

Message to Shoshe! Hope you will still read this. I saw on this thread that you got a Go Go Kidz Travelmate. I have been looking all round the UK for this product but can't find it. Called up the company and it will cost a bomb to ship it over from the US to the UK. Where did you get yours?

Thanks!
