Yes, I have flown in commercial planes - just looked at the standard seat widths - i only have a few cm to spare & I am not big-bottomed!

Just getting up and down from my seat like a lunatic looking at it and trying to work out how wide it is. (In the middle of an office)

I used a tape measure but I am at home!
I find flying very uncomfortable but I have back trouble to start with - I normally need to pay for a sports massage after flying to sort out the pain it causes me !!!

Seating on all airlines seems to be very squashed and this is especially noticeable on a long haul flight. Seat sizes have narrowed and legroom shortened over the years as airlines compete for low fares by jamming more people into less space. Average seat pitch (space from seat back to seat back) is 29 inches on a charter flight and between 32 and 35 inches on a long haul scheduled flight. The width of seats has reduced as well, so there less room to wriggle without getting cosy with a total stranger!

Charterflights do not have anywhere to upgrade you, so if you need leg room, check in hours before you need to,an ensure you get bulkhead seats. These offer more legroom, so that you can stand up and stretch every now and again. However, if you are not able-bodied, you will not be offered those by emergency exits for safety reasons (you might have to operate the doors).

On a scheduled flight, the average seat width in economy is 17 inches. If you have the cash to upgrade to business or premium economy class, your seat width rises to between 18.5 inches and 1 9 inches and your seat pitch to between 34 inches and 40 inches.

AAA, I am a size 26 in trousers, my dress size begins with a 3, and I've never squashed anyone else when I've been sitting in an airline seat. I've flown a number of times, and the only problem I had was when one airline's tray wouldn't drop down fully, partly because of my enormousness and partly because the chap in front had reclined his seat.
