Greek Islands, which one?

We're thinking of going to a Greek Island next summer. DH has been to Crete and Rhodes but many years ago on a boys holiday so very different to now. Our DC's will be 4 and 7 by the time we go.

Are any of the islands better for families than others? We want self catering, and walking distance to beach, supermarket, restaurants etc.

Went to Portugal last year and booked a villa through owner's direct. There are loads of gorgeous looking places on there on the Greek Islands but I am at a loss as to how to choose which island to go to!

Please help! TIA

with kids we have been to crete (nr to elounda), corfu (near to sidari which is big but melitsa is great), aegina (aghia maria), lefkas (nidri), parga and next year plan to go to the peloponnese. I suggest you look at simly greece and james villas and take it from there. my idea of bliss is a pool, beach within walking distance and little beachside tavernas. kids want 'pool bars' and kids to play with and dh wants the sites! we all amange to find something fab each time. My personal fave is sailing round the ionian islands.....
ps learn a few words of greek ebfore you go, it'll really help!

Have you considered Kefalonia? We went this summer and it is gorgeous. We stayed in Lassi which is about 15 mins transfer time from the airport, has beautiful beaches and decent supermarkets, restaurants, etc. It is not authentic Greek - bit of a purpose built tourist place really, but convenient with children. The San Lorenzo Village is beautiful - up the hill a little so away from the main strip - with a pool, a quiet pool bar and lovely pastel coloured self-catering apartments.

If you hire a car, there is loads to do around the island including the underwater lake and the caves which were a big hit with DS.

wanttostartafresh you are going to struggle to bget real luxury in greece as it normally comes simple and basic. I would love a fab kitchen when i go ,as i do get a bt bored eating out every night.

We went to the sani beach hotel and spa in halkidiki this year for an absolutelt blissful holiday. It is B&B & evening meals. It is all buffet style with plenty for little ones to choose. Had free sunset cruise with endless champagne on owners boat, free 4 hour cruise with diving.free room upgrade to suite with sea view. Food was fab ,place is so spotlessly clean and whats more,YOU can relax, as there is a childrens pool which is about a foot deep.
been there 3 times now.
went with 12 others this year and had the best time ever.
