needing some recommendations as have been wading through trip advisor and Time Out with little success - its a trip for DH and I so would like it to be a 'nice' hotel without having to sell our kidneys to pay for it

am I asking the impossible here!? its for Nov if that helps and we'll be staying for 4nights

The Muse I love it and so central got it on a cheap deal website.
Avoid the Waldorf it is very faded and worn and just trading on its name.

The Time hotel 224 West 49th Street

I used to stay there regularly when travelling to NYC with my previous job. It is quite cool and swanky but cheap, and very central.

The rooms are all themed (red, blue or yellow) and they give you matching jelly bellies in the same colour! It's a dealbreaker for me

Haven't been for about 3 years, but travelled there a lot over about 5 years and was consistently happy with it.

timmette the muse looks gorgeous but ridicliousy expensive on their website - which cheal deal site did you use?

Time hotel looks lovely too - jelly babies could sway me

DH & stayed at the Waldorf Astoria too at Easter (the Hilton Group had one of its many sales on and we managed to get a decent room for under $200 a night). I would recommend monitoring travelzoo over the next few weeks for a good deal in Nov.

Just got back and stayed at Hotel on Rivington. Very cool hotel and in a very buzzing Lower East Side. Highly recommended. Rooms amazing with full height windows all round!

Have also stayed before at;

Hotel QT just off times square. Rooms are v small but trendy with good location.

Night Hotel - very dark but also v cool. Rooms a good size for Times square.

Soho House in the meatpacking - pricey but THE BEST place i've stayed. truely lovely.
