Me and my flying phobia

We are due to fly to Canada on 15 August. Already I am dreading it. The recent air crash (Brazilian airlines???) over the Atlantic has made it worse. A teenage girl survived by clinging on to some floating wreckage for several hours. This is dreadful (not that she survived but what it implies) - this means that other passengers survived the impact but then drowned or were devoured by passing sharks. It would be more comforting to think that you die instantaneously on impact.

I don't fear for me it is my children...imagine, if you will....you crash land. Your children either slowly lapse into unconciousness due to hypothermia, are picked off by a Great white with much blood letting, or are swept away by a wave in front of your very eyes. So your children have died horribly, you have watched helplessly and are also on your way out. How bad can it get?

Dh thinks I am certifiable, but I can't help it.

Yes, you are more likely to get killed crossing the road - but give me crossing the road any time.

I know we could, whilst driving down the motorway, be involved in a massive pile up - but I don't give it a second thought.

But I hate, hate, hate flying. I really hate it. I would gladly never fly again.

Dh keeps pushing me to go on these fucking holidays

Dh won't fly any more. Makes me annoyed because in his youth he flew all over the place and boasts about how we went to the states etc but now we can't go anywhere by plane as a family because he has decided he is afraid of flying.

Not that this is the case with the OP obviously, just venting.

He says that he'd be OK if he was flying the plane himself.

He says he would fly if I really really wanted to go somewhere that required it but I am not sure that the resulting anxiety and clammy fear on the flight would be worth it, knowing that he has it to look forward to at the end of the holiday as well.
