Will be flying to SA when DS 18 months old, he is too big for the BA supplied cot or seat and I am not having him on my lap for 11 hours so I have bought him his own seat, but I don't want to take my own carseat. So. How do I restrain him confortable?

TIA

Having just done longhaul with my 12 month old on Emirates on Monday I can confirm the following:

We booked him his own seat. I bought a cares harness. We were still allocated bassinet seats and couldn't get anything else. Pain in the arse as at 1 year old (average height and weight) he did not fit into the cot. Armrests on bulkhead seats do not lift so he couldn't lie down.

Take off and landing he sat on hubby's knee. I put a blanket on the floor at the bassinet and he played there for some of the time. It is illegal for any passenger to sleep on the floor of the aircraft. This was announced twice on the flight.

I am starting another thread about a carseat/stroller combo that I found when out shopping yesterday. I can't do links but google sit n stroll.

You do not have to take a car seat when you book an under 2 their own seat but they must sit on your knee for take off and landing and during any turbulence. For the next stage of our flight I hope to get 3 seats together away from the bulkhead.

If you do take your carseat you need to be sure that it will actually fit!

Libra,
My DS2 is a v big boy (was wearing 2yr clothes by 16 months & now, at 20 months, is almost as big as his 3.5yr old brother who is above average for his age) & when we flew BA to Sydney when DS2 was 18 months he had the baby seat which he seemed to quite enjoy. Also meant that we had the bulkhead seats which helped with his brother. Will admit though, didn't realise that the max weight was 13kgs, suspect he was more like 15kgs at that stage.
But appreciate you want to take your car seat & I have seen this product which might be of use to lug the seat around. Not sure if you can buy it through a UK site or if you have to get it from the States but think it might be necessary esp as you don't get your buggy 'til the luggage area so tricky dealing with all your carry-on & your child.
Also they def won't let your child sleep on the floor, I got away with it with my 3yr old for about 1/2hr on one of our 4 legs but that was because we were in one of the bulkheads on the side & it just looked like a pile of blankets.
Hope that you have a great trip!

I saw a couple with one of those wire trolley things where the flat bit you put stuff on folds up and down (ifykwim) with a car seat tied to it with bungy ropes and child in it, so they used it like a stroller (pulling behind them) while in the airport and then had the car seat for the plane. Presume normal stroller went into the baggage hold.

Seemed like a good option to me and one which I'd use if I had to travel alone with DS.
