"Special" things to do in New York?

geordieminx · 21/07/2009 12:03

We have been once before, 7 years ago, but it was very last minute (2 days before) so we just kinda went and wandered.

This time we are going for our honeymoon, 3 1/2 days, so would like to make the most of it, and do some really nice/special/amazing things if possible.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I know exactly what you mean about being in a movie - things lije the "walk" and "dont walk" signs and the steam rising from the man hole covers made me

I think the problem last time was that dp and I had only known each other a week when he said " fancy going to new york next week" so off we went
, it was amazing but we were still very much in thaat phase of not wanting to express to much of an opinion incase it offended/put out other person IYKWIM. I was very much on best behaviour

i want to go back now!

Maybe next summer - what do you think hula? New York again?

IsItMeOr · 22/07/2009 13:13

I couldn't believe that the taxi drivers were so grumpy just like the "myth" - we didn't use any, but the horns were very much in evidence. Not like the, in my experience, London cabbies. Not sure I would want to live there, but great fun to visit.

Hulababy · 22/07/2009 13:40

Would love to return Katz; but next year's biggie is Las Vegas for my sister's wedding.

geordieminx · 22/07/2009 15:19

You could always to Vegas then New York or vice versa? Or New York then a road trip across to Las Vegas....Oooh how I would love that.

No that's not the website at all!!. Some deliberately are scams and will charge you for making an application. ESTA applications are free.

The ONLY official one to use for the ESTA is this one:-

esta.cbp.dhs.gov

You won't need to show them the printout but it is worth keeping it with you for immigration purposes.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 22/07/2009 16:31

I note that site want to charge you around £20 sterling as well!!. Stuff that!!.

DO NOT USE that website, instead use the one that I have linked for you. That is the official US govt one and they will not charge you for making an application.

geordieminx · 22/07/2009 16:32

Thank you so much.

I am so thick sometimes - luckily I didnt do it last night (((((lazy slatern)))))

Get the Staten Island Ferry at sunset, then come back when its dark. So romantic! All the buildinsg were orange from the sunset when we left and twinkly when we got back.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 22/07/2009 16:39

Hi Geordieminx,

Glad to read that because if you had done you would have been scammed to the tune of £40 for no good reason!!!. Not just to mention any potential damage to you re idenitity theft. Many scammers bought the word "ESTA" for use on their own websites, many of these are operating out of Korea.

Use only the official one that I've posted up for you.

Best wishes, hope you have a great time in NYC

Attila

I'd second the Oyster Bar and the Staten Island ferry. I also like to visit the Frick Collection and have dim sum in Chinatown. American movie cinemas are also a treat but maybe none of this is very honeymoony. Congratulations by the way.

If you like pizza, go to Lombardi's. Best pizza ever.

Definitely have dinner at the River Cafe & go for the tasting menu - DH & I agree that it was one of the best meals that we've ever had. We were there at Easter.

JammyQueenOfTheSewers · 02/10/2009 19:08

We went a few years ago and highlights were

Rockerfeller building and Empire State (we did one by day the other by night)
Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge
Radio City tour
River cruise - we did the one that goes half way and back again rather than the full loop.

PheasantPlucker · 02/10/2009 19:23

I stayed at The Algonquin earlier this year, and sitting in their old bar having a cocktail was lovely. There was also a restaurant just a few doors along which was lovely, but the name of which I have forgotten.

I loved walking around SoHo too.

JetLi · 02/10/2009 23:00

Time your trip up the Empire State Building so you get to see the view in daylight, but also so you can hang around to see it get dark - amazing really.
Carnegie Deli for breakfast/brunch.
Papaya King for hotdogs.
Don't order a Manhatten - they're bloody vile
Going up the Statue of Liberty is overrated. A ride in a yello cab is essential.
Visit Strawberry Fields in Central Park and shed a tear or two for the loss of John Lennon.
It's a truly amazing place.

pebbles1234 · 10/02/2010 13:06

Would give a second (or even third!) vote to the Central park boathouse, saw the sun set from the terrance and the food was fantastic! Also Lombardi's was good for an authentic pizza experience, and if its warm enough (and its open) the cafe at the Rockerfeller Centre was pretty good too...

We did the Staten Island Ferry, walked over the Brooklyn bridge, and, if you're a SATC fan, the SATC tour....what an understanding husband I have! was great fun tho and only takes a couple of hours.

also loved Greenwich Village- lots of fab places to eat, drink, shop and soak up atmosphere.

plus, as its your honeymoon what about a trip to tiffany's? i was allowed to pick something as an (inexpensiveish!) treat and it was a fab feeling walking down 5th Ave with my little blue bag, plus now we're home everytime I wear those earrings I think of NYC!

have a great time am so

oh and a Rough guide or time out (we used both) are invaluable, would highly reccomend investing.

Top of the Tower bar in the Beekman Hotel (near the UN) get a window seat or go onto the terrace, lovely mid-town views at night, cocktails and pianist - very special and romantic!

Brandys piano bar (at about 83rd and second) a great night out guaranteed - neither of these charge enterance

Walk over Brooklyn Bridge and brunch at Brooklyn Heights Cafe, wander round nice shops nearby and take in the great lower manhattan views from the waterside viewing area

Joolyjoolyjoo · 10/02/2010 21:53

I LOVED NY! My tip would be that when you arrive at the airport, treat yourself to a limo- they aren't that much more expensive than the taxis, and sets the holiday off to a special start. Our limo driver was lovely, and on hearing it was our first time in the city, opened the skylight as we came in over the bridge, and said "up you get and take your first look at Manhattan"!The memory of standing there looking out the skylight with a cold beer in my hand looking down on Manhattan at night will always make me smile!!

Oh- and one night go to one of the many amazing delis and eat in your room- it was the biggest meal we had, and that was saying something given the amazing NY portion sizes!! Have fun!

Thanks x
