Pick your own berries- is there anywhere accessible from central london by public transport?

i really want to do this with the kids next week. A friend told me of one place but it is not easy to get to without a car (which we do not have). Is there anywhere I can get to easily by public transport? I don't mind a train journey so long as I don't then need a bus or three and a long walk to get there.

Well, you're not supposed to, although in practice it's impossible not to eat some. There are lots of weigh stations dotted about, so you can pay and then eat with a clear conscience.

Ah, I see! As a pyo virgin, I always assumed they priced them to take account of all the eating that would get done.

oh policy, I didn't realise you were so close. Garsons is fab, I love it there.

Ilana, it has virtually every fruit and veg you can think of! Your arms will be a foot longer from carrying everything! the only thing i would say on foot is that the PYO space is vast, really vast. You can get a hand out showing you where everything is which might be worthwhile if you are going to walk round the whole place!

So do people usually drive around it then? Perhaps it is not the right place for us. A small place would suit us just as well as the ds's are young and I just want them to experience the picking.

If you have little kids, then it will be a long walk around Garsons fields. It is a fantastic place but without a car I'm not so sure.

yes people usually drive round it

I have seen people walk round it but I think you might struggle with small ones. I cannot remember how close the strawberries are to the entrance. You could always get the taxi to drop you off by the berries and then do the fruit and veg that's near to it iyswim.

They have sort of zones. So you drive to the first bit (and that's like say corn and cabbages and broccoli and cauliflower) then you drive to the next bit and that's raspberries, blackcurrants etc. etc.

They aren't massively far apart but it would be quite a lot of walking.

The locals do drive around it, yes. It might not be the right place for you if you don't fancy long-ish walks with the little ones.

Worth a visit when they get older, though.

Foxy, let me know next time you're coming!

foxinsocks · 11/07/2009 22:11

that's a map

you can see how big it is! but you could always do just one side of it iyswim

foxinsocks · 11/07/2009 22:11

I will do policy!

IlanaK · 11/07/2009 22:36

Wow it is huge. And the berries are not near the entrance (well, the autumn ones are). Perhaps not the place for us

your only other option is hiring a people carrier and driving there. You can fit 7 in those (incl 3 car seats) but it does cost a fair bit.
