with three primary aged kids.
the interactive thing in the turbine Hall is a great starter( climbing on wobble boards and scaling things with ropes) and you can eat your sarnies in there...
then went up to the SMART9 kids art) desk on ? floor 3 where they gave them " who is a super surrealist" activity that was PERFEct for all three.
WE all learned a lot about surrealism( apart from boo hiss to the guard in the " thirty pieces of silver" exhibition who told every kid in there ( speaking normally) to be quiet!

We then did all the pop art and jackson pollocks at a break neck speed.

AND IT WAS FREE!!

I love that part of London - we can get a direct train there which helps too. Where did you end up eating?

notnowbernard · 27/05/2009 09:19

I heard yesterday they are going to reintroduce entry fees for all museums

WhiteFish · 27/05/2009 09:20

ah then the day went DOWN hill
were suckered into fuckingtussauds and it was so uttlery shit in comparison.

Good to hear that Eds diner worked out - must try it the next time (fussy eaters here too)

Agree that Mme Tussauds is awful. I always tell visitors not to Easter their money on it...

WhiteFish · 27/05/2009 09:35

I know - why i went i dunno. anyway - the tate rose to even greater prowess on its shitness so maybe it awas a good " art encouraging" policy.

Lots of mums in converse at tate

re eds - they gave me 20% off - despite me not having a voucher It must be my charisma.
They said joining smartsave.co/com would do similar again

Tussauds is absolute shite. We had a free pass to go there last year and TBH it wasn't worth the price.

WhiteFish · 27/05/2009 10:01

I agree SG.

On a slightly related note, the Science Museum is nice and hands-on and free. And if you're outside London, the Look Out Discovery Centre in Bracknell is 100% hands-on child-friendly exhibits. It does cost money though. Vouchers exist though if you Google, free child with an adult.

Glad you had a good day at the Tate - there are so many free things to do in London I don't know why anyone bothers with Tussauds etc. We live near the Tate Britain which also has children's trails etc, and quite often get the Tate to Tate boat - it is only a short trip and you go past The Houses of Parliament, the London Eye etc, the DCs love it.

Science Museum, Imperial War Museum, Museum of Childhood, Horniman Museum are all great for kids.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 27/05/2009 12:31

i will be livid if they introduce entrance fees

HaventSleptForAYear · 28/05/2009 12:44

Sounds great.

Might do a trip when we go to London this summer.

Any tips on the Winchester INtech place?

I have to see students in Winchester in July and will be with DH and the 2DS in tow.

DS are 4.5 and 2.5. Would it be suitable for them? Could they spend several hours there?

Am looking at the site too - it looks like I would have to drop them there and then drive into the centre of Winchester.

HaventSleptForAYear · 28/05/2009 13:27

Ok just done a search and it seems it will be good for DS1 but not for DS2.

Never mind.

IGNORE.
