I would love to try the one on Turks and Caicos but they're horrifically expensive! I think you get the best value out of them if you have older (school age) or teenage children too.

if you have younger children and lots of money i'd do Powder Byrne for a luxury hotel and childcare combination, and not have to fly so far either.

I think that Sandals is the one that's childfree DDD - isn't it the resort that peddles a nauseating version of heteromonogamy that's the equivalent of Valentine Pink Heart Cupid Chocolate Fortnight?

hiccymapops · 24/05/2009 14:04

I think they're child free too, i agree Powder Byrne look very good for families.

I have been to a Beaches hotel in the Dominican. It was ok. Wouldnt rush back.

I wouldt go to one as the Sandlas ones explicilty ban gay couples afaik

Beaches is child free as far as I remember. We went to one a few years ago in Cuba - it was lovely, yes, but cost us £500 more - EACH - than the Riu hotel 500 yds down the road....... we made friends with a couple in the Riu and visited them - it was just as nice. The only thing they didnt have compared to us was 2 short dives a day - which was to one of only 3 dive sites, so 6 dives later we couldnt be bothered to go again.

I came away with the feeling that Sandals / Beaches were overrated. Great holiday but a grand dearer than it needed to be.

It is beaches that is the family one, sandals is child free.

i went to sandals for a wedding once when DH and I were engaged.

i thought I would absoutely hate it.

We had a great time

BigBellasBeerBelly · 24/05/2009 14:56

they do ban gay couples joggler. Not least in the jamaican resorts as I believe it's illegal to be gay in jamaica

however one of our party was gay and was there with his best friend (female) and I didn't spot them pretending to be in love very much

I stayed at the beaches in Negril, Jamaica. My sister got married at the Sandals and since sandals only does couples and I was single at the time I was put at the beaches. It was really nice and I had a great time.

I have been to Hedo II which is a little way along from the Sandals in Montego Bay (Hedo *definitely child free BTW) and it was a running joke that everyone at Sandals was uptight heteromonogamist numptyville...

BigBellasBeerBelly · 24/05/2009 19:18

Now there's a surprise SGB

Was it good?

I though about you lot down the road as I swam in the heart shaped pool and DH eyed the ridiculous pneumatic yanks in a slightly terrified fashion

solidgoldSneezeLikeApig · 24/05/2009 21:01

Oh I had a wonderful time - it was nearly 10 years ago now and sadly I will probably never get to go back, but am glad I went when I did.

Kiwinyc · 24/05/2009 23:32

We've done Sandals. Got a deal we couldn't resist to Antigua last yr. Thought we'd hate it, but we didn't. Being childfree helped a huge amount in the enjoyment factor though! It was 7 glorious, responsibility-free days for the first time in 5 yrs.

As long as you realise what it is - bland & American stylee, it was fine.

ReneRusso · 24/05/2009 23:41

went to Beaches in Jamaica a few years back - it was pretty good, think it was the Negril one. Food gets a bit samey after a week, but generally its a good holiday. the kids club was good.

SmileyMylee · 24/05/2009 23:52

Went to Beaches in Jamaica last year. Loved it, but food was a bit repetitive after a while. The accomodation was not as good as I had expected either - a bit small and not 5 star as described. More 3 / 4. Had been to Sandals in Antigua several years ago and had expected a bit more luxury for the money.
