My fella likes the West of the Isle of Wight, Penwith in Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and Jersey and won't go anywhere else - where can I persuade him is similar enough to try?

Is it the language, the food, the heat or fear of flying that he is worried about in going on holiday outside the UK continental shelf?

Finding out what the real issue is will be the start of getting to a solution. Getting him to admit it will be the difficult part.

Good luck.

padboz · 29/04/2009 15:49

heat and flying definately - hes been other places - I've managed to get him to Switzerland (nice but no sea) Kefalonia (4 hour flight, white knuckled all the way) Crete (ditto flight, plus Too Hot), Spain (too dry and dusty) Germany - nice but no sea.

At this point we had some children, so even I thought the UK was a better idea.

He burns easily and instantly and he's shit scared of flying

no problem with food. He says he likes 'green' whatever that means and we have to go on holiday when the schools do, so no chance of going later in the season....

might just go alone

If he hates flying, could you try and go somewhere on the ferry/train instead? Obviously you won't be able to get that far away but you could still try Normandy or somewhere like that for a bit of a change. Shouldn't be too hot either

ABetaDad · 29/04/2009 15:57

I see why he is not keen. How about Spain or France or Northern Germany by ferry and then touring by car or on the train? All three countries have wonderful luxury trains that work.

West/North of Spain is not too hot as it is on Atlantic and can be reached by ferry.

How about a cruise by ship down to Madeira, Azores. It is hot but he can pick and choose when he goes outsde on deck. No flying involved if you pick the right cruise.

How about a cruise to the Baltic or Scandinavia - even cooler weather but still sunny for sun bathing?

Alternatively, he can get treatment for fear of flying.

I am thinking you could do a fair few places by Eurostar or ferry. Belgium, France, Holland and Germany are all places you
could drive to or get the train very easily.

My best friend went to Morocco by train. Eurostar, TGV, local trains and ferry across the Med to Morocco.

Also, more locally, Wales is fab. Lovely beaches! Also, Scotland is beautiful!

pointydog · 29/04/2009 22:52

Anglesey

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/04/2009 22:57

If you can persuade him away from the water, then the Alps are lovely in the summer and it's not too hot. Great food, good beer - nice walks out in the sunshine. If he starts to twitch then you can find him a lake or two.
Driveable if you stop once overnight on the way, or you could take the train.

PortAndLemon · 29/04/2009 22:57

Or Normandy if not Brittany.

pointydog · 29/04/2009 22:59

Ile de Re

tigerdriver · 29/04/2009 22:59

West Coast of Scotland. Obviously a long drive/train/short flight etc but amazing and beautiful and still in UK if he doesn't want to go abroad. Isle of Mull. Skye. Etc.

Pembrokeshire
West Highlands
Brittany

South East Ireland, round the Ring of Kerry - stunningly beautiful and sounds like it'd be right up his street.

Directskiandsun · 06/05/2009 13:10

padboz - are you still looking?

If so, I'd echo the Brittany suggestions - not baking hot, open space, clean beaches, you can get there by ferry and car.

Alternatively, the Alps - again, you can take the ferry and then drive about 8/9 hours from Calais. We love it for the fresh air even when it's really warm, stunning scenery, lots to see and do. If he likes water there are gorgeous lakes (they look 'real' but are man-made with water that is filtered from the mountains) and the lakes will have 'beach' areas, grassy picnic areas, adventure parks, zipwires, cycling, mountain-biking etc. Drop me a line via the details in my profile, if you think this may suit
