What do you recommend as essentials to take abroad...This is our first holidy abroad in 5 years and the first with children...dd aged 4 and ds aged 2...I'm thinking in terms of First Aid kits, insect repellant, beach tents!? are they a good idea...do they count towards your baggage allowance etc...help!

personally I wouldn't bother with beach tents, too fiddly, and a pain to carry. If too sunny find a parasol or some shade?

We went to Egypt last Nov with 2 DC the same age as yours. Took our Maclaren buggy and was very pleased I did. Took antibacterial wipes to try and stave off the dicky tummys. In fact wipes in general are as useful there as at home. Childrens books with multiple stories in (IYSWIM) colouring books and crayons; their own juice cups with lids; arm bands for 2 year old; loads of snacks for plane; 2 x sun hats each as one invariably gets wet; socks for DS1 as he refuses to wear sandals; bite cream; plasters; re-hydration sachets...

Hope that helps! Will think about it and come back on if I think of anything else.

You don't need anything, you can buy it all out there. We've just been with a 4yr and 3yr old and didn't take anything like that. We bought an inflatable beach ball there. You could take a small first aid kit, that is probably a good idea. Beach tents are more trouble than they are worth IME, and yes they would count in your luggage.

As GB says, kids books/crayons for the flight are a good idea, as are snacks or a packed lunch. You could take suncream if you get a bargain on it here, any cuddly toys they can't be parted from.

IME,Majorca generally has everything you can possibly need.May I ask which part you're going to?

Without wishing to alarm you I would ask your pharmacist for a cream for jellyfish stings. dd1 and several other children were stung while we were in Majorca last year. Please don't panic-it was painful but not dangerous. The lovely manageress of our apartments gave us a cream for dd - it would have been useful to have our own.
Also be prepared to buy bottled water, the tap water is not nice tasting. Otherwise everything else was available there and Spanish nappies worked perfectly well!

Buy this if you are going anywhere where there are lots of jellyfish.
