Bristol, tomorrow

Taking dd (9) to the Hippodrome tomorrow evening, but would like to make more of a day of it.

Need to know about fun/interesting things to do, nice (but not too expensive) places to eat, and finally somewhere dh can spend the evening listening to good blues/rock live music.

Bit late to ask, I know, but I have faith in MN!

The museum is fun website here

Gigs list here - any good?

We usually eat at Mc D's

mumonthenet · 13/04/2009 21:15

that boat thingy HMS Great Britain is great for kids...maybe for DH too. In dry dock and you can go downstairs under the hull as well - fascinating.

Don't know about the rest, but others will be along.......

BoysAreLikeDogs · 13/04/2009 21:17

oooh yy ss gt britain is FAB

harvey nicks might be a place for lunch ???

CMOTdibbler · 13/04/2009 21:23

We went to SS Great Britain yesterday - we really enjoyed it. There are also boat trips down the gorge or round the harbour that you might like

The zoo is great.

Theres a Wagamama in Clifton if you go to the zoo, and a number of restaurants like Franky and Bennies in the new Cabot Circus

navyeyelasH · 13/04/2009 21:42

will you have a car? www.whatsonbristol.co.uk is really handy. There are loads of free farms, st werberghs is especially good as they have baby animals like piglets and lambs at the minute then there is a nice park and cafe there too.

There are loads of places to recommend, how far you willing to walk, are buses ok etc?!

navyeyelasH · 13/04/2009 21:43

opps sorry just saw dd is 9, I thought 3! Park might be out of question then

JuxaLOTmoreChocolate · 13/04/2009 22:00

We'll go in the car, but dh will park it somewhere near the Hippodrome and then won't move it. I am not great for walking (ms).

I can google all those places though and see whether I'd be OK to get to them. It might be better not to focus on the Hippodrome for parking but I'll check on google maps.

I think dd will enjoy the museum, and the boat sounds good too.

DD is still young enough to enjoy a park, navyeyelasH!

Thank you all, knew you'd come up trumps!

This might sound weird but bear with me! I live sort of near the hippodrome and my flat has free parking. If you're going to be in town between 8am and 7pm (when I'm in work) you are more than welcome to use my parking space? You're meant to have a permit, but I've lived here for nearly 2 years and have never seen a clamper about - if you're willing to risk it email me on [email protected] and I'll give you the address of my parking space. It's near St Mary Redcliff Church, to give you an idea of walking distance to hippodrome here is a map

The park I'm thinking off is probably too babyish but there are a lot of bigger ones like blaise and hengrove; but they do require a bus ride.

At bristol is quite good and central and there are lots of museums and galleries, the zoo you can get a bus to, think it's a number 8 or 9, SS great britain also good - bit pricey but worth it IMO. Loads!

navyeyelasH · 13/04/2009 22:20

another good link

willowthewispa · 13/04/2009 22:24

The City Museum and Gallery and the science museum, Explore@Bristol are both in walking distance from the Hippodrome.

JuxaLOTmoreChocolate · 13/04/2009 22:24

navyeyelash, that is such a kind and generous offer. The thing starts at 7pm though and will take about 2.5 hrs so we won't use your space, but thank you so much for offering.

Am immersing myself in all these links now, trying to work out where things are in relation to the Hippodrome, and which ones we can reasonable get to, and therefore what time we should aim at arriving etc. (DH will probably not leave before midday, so we'll probably not have time for any of them! He might be persuaded by the boat though...)

No problem - if you change your mind just let me know! Otherwise the next cheapest place to park is the NCP near colston hall, trenchard street although I only know the flat fee of £2.50 after 6pm, so double check costs before 6pm.

Don't forget google map street view is fab for finding your way around! Have a brill time, I'm welsh but have lived in Bristol for 7 years and love the place, esp in the sun

JuxaLOTmoreChocolate · 13/04/2009 22:46

Is it a very long walk from the Hippodrome to Bristol City Museum? It doesn't look toooooo bad on the map, but I have no sense of distance!

domesticslattern · 13/04/2009 22:52

About twenty minutes. But up a massive hill. Entirely do-able.

navyeyelasH · 13/04/2009 22:54

it's up hill, no long walk about 15-20 minutes for me and I'm a bit of a stroller. Have a look on google maps - or you could be lazy and get a bus for about £1.50! Buses are really expensive and so are taxis - you can get a day rider for about £4 I think if you will use the bus more than twice might be a good buy.

You could also walk straight up park street which is more straight forward, but it is a steep old hill, but it does have loads of shops and cafes etc so you could stop start.

navyeyelasH · 13/04/2009 22:57

sorry last link didn't work, try this to see how steep it is

JuxaLOTmoreChocolate · 13/04/2009 23:27

Wow, google street thingy is fun isn't it? They haven't got to us yet and it's the first time I've seen it.

That is a walk I could do in about 1hr, but I would need to factor in rest stops as well unless we took the wheelchair; actually we might do that, no reason why not.

Will chat to dh about it tomorrow - he's designing an album cover and is incapable of human interaction atm. I've emailed the music links to him as there's just a chance he'll pay attention to something digital!

I think the Museum will be best bet as we all three enjoy them and this one looks really good.

Thank you.
