Lightweight buggy for longhaul flight... which one?

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of buying a lightweight folding buggy for our summer trip to Kenya and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

We currently have a Quinny Buzz which doesn't fold very well so not a good option and a Mamas & Papas Pilko Pramette which does turn into a pushchair but is quite bulky!

Our baby will be 1yr old so would need to recline for sleeping but competelty flat is not really necessary.

I am looking at:
Quinny Zapp?
Some kind of Maclaren?
M&P Luna?

Please let me know if you love/hate yours!

Thanks

I've had a few of these types of buggy and I honestly think the quinny zapp is the best. It's really easy to fold, and folds down to a tiny size... we got ours 3rd hand and it still works fantastically!

McClaren Quest - perfectly light, easy to fold - wouldnt be without mine!

I second the Zapp. You can take it on as hand luggage and can stick them straight in as soon as you are off the plane.

Does the Zapp recline at all?

if i were to buy one of those for a hol it would be a maclaren quest.

Zapp doesn;t recline at all.

I have a luna which i adore but I am not taking on a plane next week because it's big flaw is that it folds inside out - so the seat fabric etc would get wrecked!

I'm taking my pliko actually. my ds is 8 months so still needs a good recline for a sleep. Quest would be an option i'd consider though if i needed to get a new one. I have a triumph from when my dd was small but I wouldn't (personally) use it yet as fewer seat position options and leg rest is better in a quest.

nooonit · 06/04/2009 17:22

Rachel2796 - Zapp doesn't recline at all but both my DDs have quite happily slept in it out and about. Don't think it's that much more upright than in a car seat IYSWIM.

It's great to take on a plane - folds tiny into its bag etc.

Would recommend purchasing buggy weights if you intend to hang alot on the back though!

I found the Maclaren Techno was okay for flying with, it folds up into a pretty sturdy and compact package. It reclines well and is also sturdy for hanging bags off.

Not small enough folded to fit in the cabin I don't think, but Easyjet let us take it right up to the plane, and took it straight out of the hold so it was there when we walked down the steps to the tarmac. I think airlines have different policies on this though, so worth checking.

Maclaren Triumph. We bought one for DD 1, 4 years ago. Still going strong for Ds. Ok to use from 6 months I think, does recline a enough to sleep, very light and ours has a carrying handle.

It has been on many trips to Europe and we shall be using it again this Spring and Summer......

paow · 07/04/2009 14:52

I would recommend you buy a mclaren techno or a chicco lite, they both recline, the chicco lite reclines all the way back.
I had a zapp and as ds got older hated the way he fell asleep with his head hanging down. Sold it now thank goodness!!
I think it's really important to have a fully reclining one as the kids can sleep in the eve while out etc. And don't spend too much in case it gets damaged en route!

I have taken the P3 all over bought a kiddicare travel bag for it . Was going to get a zapp but would only use it for the travel bit and then it would be no good. I now have a bee now and am buying a travel bag and checking it in ( and keeping fingers crossed). I also have a inglesina tripp - not sure if you can get them in the Uk but it reclines to almost flat and is solid but light.

Rachel2796 · 07/04/2009 19:04

Hi Rosa,

Is a P3 the Pliko Pramette? We have this but the airline told me to take a "small" buggy and thought it might be too bulky but if you have taken it all over with no probs it will probably be ok...

Didn't know you could get generic travel bags so that's definately a good idea as wouldn't want it to get damaged! M&P seem to do one for Pilko for £15 which is quite reasonable for them!

I think the P3 is the pramette with the seat slightly different. Generally the airlines mean not something in 2 bits but something that umbrella folds. I think for the first Kiddicare bag I paid £7 then the second £10. You can roll it up and stuff it vertical behind the seat ! I wanted dd to have a lie flat and be comfy when we were away not a cheap non comfy buggy plus we were going back and forth to the Uk and we were there a considerable length of time so took the Peg Perego.

alittlebitshy · 18/04/2009 15:21

Update: I took my Pliko on a plane last week. It was ideal. Kept it right up until we boarded, then it came off one the conveyer belt thingy. Was easy to fold quickly but comfy enough for ds to sleep in when he needed. We hired a car (a golf) and it fitted in the boot fine with 2 large back packs.

Thanks so much for the update! I think I will also take the Pliko rather than shelling out on another pushchair.

Thank you to everyone for all your advice
