Does it cover Canary Islands? They are Spain but not EU so I haven't a clue.

Yes, just make sure you take the EHIC card with you.

Check it hasn't expired though - we assumed once you had one they lasted forever, but they don't. We've had to renew ours.

Yes they do but make sure you see a STATE appointed health provider and not just a private doctor.

We have just been to tenerife and had to see a GP after DSs excema went nuts. We just took the number that the hotel gave us for an english speaking doctor and now we can't claim the money back about 70 euros and there is no point claiming on our travel insurance because we have £50 excess
