Has anyone been on cheapy Haven breaks - grim or OK?

We have been given some newspaper offer vouchers from grandparents for cheap breaks to Haven holiday parks, caravan or chalet stays. I am wondering if they are a bit grim or good value for money. We are having major house renovations this year and won't be getting abroad so was thinking of it as a break from 'the building site' and a bit of quality time. Ds will be 18 months by the time we go.
I presume it might make a difference which park/area you choose so any recommendations gratefully recieved.
Cheers in advance x

we went to caister last september when dd was 13 months, 2 bed superior caravan was big and clean and the site was good with a nice warm swimming pool, soft play and parks, the evening entertainment started with some characters dancing on stage and then a kids disco, then we took dd back to sleep at 8 so dont know what else was on.
We are going again next week to Pretatyn so hopefully that will be ok too.
It is good for the money imo, £100 for 5 days for 3 of us.

The one we went on was pure revolting slit your wrists depressing hell. It was the one in hastings and having never done it before or since dont know if it was typical. The caravan was revoltingly dirty, the entertainment grimly depressing. Never again.

We went to the one in Cornwall. Entertainment was standard, not my cup of tea right enough. But the caravan was awful - and we paid for the upgrade. Covered in mould, radiators that didn't work.

In saying that dc's had a great time and are asking to go back this year

sb6699 - which one in Cornwall was that?

pinkkoala · 19/03/2009 08:17

We went to DEvon cliffs 2 yrs ago, twice. We had one of the top caravans which are lovely, had no complaints with that, the entertainment was good especially for the kids.

The only negative we had was as the name suggests we were on the cliffs above the beach but there wasn't any fencing around the edge of the cliffs, where there was approx 100ft drop down sheer rock into the sea or the beach.

We are thinking of trying rockley park in dorset this year, anybody been.

Thanks for all your messages. I think we will put application form in today. Going for Tenby as first choice as haven't been to Wales on holiday since I was tiny!! I don't think the entertainment side of things will worry us too much as we will probably be back in caravan with ds by 8pm anyway, plus 'Phoenix Nights' style might be good for a laugh once or twice. As long as caravan ok and a nice pool, play area etc I think we will be reasonably happy. How wrong can you go for £80 all in? If it's really bad we could just come home!

Perran Sands.

It said in the brochure direct beach access too. You should have seen us trying to get the buggy up that hill - should have read direct beach access if you enjoy mountain climbing and don't mind sheer drops.

I think some of the parks are really good. Check the holiday watchdog site before you book.

nickschick · 19/03/2009 16:10

sb- i climbed that bloody mountain twice a day for a week 7 months pregnant lol.

Having said that perran was definitely one of our best holidays.

Notalone · 19/03/2009 17:23

Cherrypie - Tenby itself is amazing! You will have a fantastic time

Mumwhensdinnerready · 19/03/2009 18:11

Grim, grim, stick to the floor, grim

WilyWombat · 19/03/2009 18:20

Perran is good but I agree regarding the beach access, the beach itself is lovely.

We did Kiln Park Tenby too on an offer -which we also enjoyed.

The "entertainment" was my every nightmare come to life, but the children enjoyed it...tbh there was a chance I would commit hari kari if I ever heard the Kentucky Fried Chicken song again!!

I agree about checking the reviews first and they probably do vary.

It wouldnt be my first choice of holiday but if money/time were limited and you dont go expecting luxury or sophistication it can be enjoyable.

saggyhairyarse · 19/03/2009 21:20

Rockley Park is a lovely site!

That was the first Haven we went to. It was clean, well kept and in a good spot. In the town there is a play park with a splash pool/cafe that is right on the beachy/rivery bit so a good spot for the kids.

Perran Sands was shitola! Just a dump. Though I liked Perranporth itself.
