We are going away this summer and my dd's passprt picture was taken at 4 weeks old. she is now 2.5. do i need to get the picture redone? we are only going to mallorca but i don't want to get stopped from getting on the plane. does it really matter?

A child's passport is valid for 5 years. Officials won't bat an eyelid.

SoupDragon · 12/03/2009 13:46

DSs were both travelling on similar pictures when their passports expired at age 5!!

haggisaggis · 12/03/2009 13:46

We hav ebeen to the US with baby pictures in the kids' passports when they were about 4 - so you should be OK.

SoupDragon · 12/03/2009 13:46

Which reminds me, DS1's must expire again this year.

MadameCastafiore · 12/03/2009 13:47

No - they have to allow for the fact that the kid looks nothing like the picture if it was taken when they were small.

Which is a bot of luck because DS looks like Wayne Rooney in his passport picture and he most certainly doesn't now!

I have been asked about DDs passport befpre as she has a different surname from the rest of us and I had to explain that she was from our first marraige - I was advised to take along my marraige certificate, her birth certificate and my decree absolute though!

My dd has a passport picture of her at 6 weeks. She is now 4. We've been to Europe, the US and Australia with her and never been stopped. You'll be fine.

Going to spain they had a joke with DD, asked her to take off her sunglasses and then commented on the fact she looked so young in her pic, but all good natured and was being nice to DD.

LilRedWG · 13/03/2009 10:59

DD is three months in her picture and has travelled to several places with no problem. She is now 2.10.

The last time we flew was in June, when she was 2.1. On our return to England the passport control official said to DD, "Hello, is your name xxx?" DD - of course - said, "No". Cue much embarassment for DH and I and much laughter for passport lady. She said it is common for such little ones to deny their names, but to be aware that as she gets older she will be asked what her name is, just to check that she is who we say she is.

Never had a problem with DDs passports, but security is another matter. Twice she has been singled out while going through security, once she was searched, another time her trunki was stopped and completely emptied and her teddies patted down. First time she was 2 second time 3. Think she must look a bit suspect. first time was awful because i was travelling with them both on my own and DD1 had already gone through fine, but they wouldn't let her back through to us and I obviously had to stay with DD2 while they carried out their search. She is also always the one who sets off the beepers.
By the way she has also stopped a plane landing because she refused to sit in her seat, pilot had to circle the airport for twenty minutes until she was sitting and strapped in, we were sooo popular on that flight.
Such a joy travelling with kids!!! Used to be such a relaxing experience but now I dread it every time made worse by the fact we fly out three or four times a year to my Mums house in Spain.
