Brittany Hols

Hi, Any recommendations for holidays to Brittany? Thinking of going in September with 1yr old and taking car via ferry. Preferrably self catering, but no idea which area of Brittany to be looking as we have never been.

We're planning exactly this for the summer hols!

We'll be taking the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo, and looking to stay in a gite no further south than Rennes (ie not more than 1h from St Malo). There appears to be masses to see and do within an hour or so drive from that area, and plenty within that area as well, which will reduce the amount of driving our dcs will have to tolerate. With a 1yo you might not have that restriction as they are more portable and nap-anywhere-anytime at that age.

We've found this book very helpful so far.

Will be watching this thread with interest.

we are staying here in July. Haven't stayed here before but have holidayed in Brittany. Went with Canvas last time which was lovely but we fancied the farm experience this time.

Great that'll give me something to go on... thanks

McDreamy that looks lovely - how did you find out about this? Internet searches or recommendations?

My mum and dad live in Brittany about an hour from St Malo. We found the ferry hard work, but I think it was the drive from Manchester to Portsmouth and vice versa that really finished us off. Was 16 hours door to door- yawn.

Just did an internet search until I found something that looked nice. Last time we went (went with friends, going with the same friends this time) our children were quite small and fairly easy to entertain.

This time we have another 3 children between us (so 5 in total) and figured we would need a bit more to do so a working farm seemed ideal.

We also shared a large mobile home last time which was great but with the family expansion there is no way we would all fit in now so needed for find accommodation we could all fit into. I have spoken to the owners and they sound really nice.

I love Brittany! We spent our last two holidays there, and are going again this summer.

I would recommend the south coast (Finisterre or Morbihan) as the weather in the north is much to similar to the UK! Somewhere around Vannes or Carnac (tend to be a bit more pricy) the Etel estuary is nice or Port Louis near Lorient. A bit further west there are lovely coastal towns near Quimper.

The beaches in Brittany are truly amazing, and the water should still be warm in September (if the summer is good). I would really recommend staying somewhere with a beach - there are plenty of really sweet little villages with them!

Also, I do recommend being within walking distance of somewhere with at least one or two little shops and restaurants. Out of the way places are wonderful, but I find that after a few days it gets on my nerves if you have to get in the car everytime you run out of something.

I sound like the Brittany tourist board now, but it is a very nice, laid back holiday choice particularly with young children.

I hope you have a lovely time if you go.

We were just outside Carnac last time - lovely

Just noticed this, we have a gite near to Vannes - we've not got a lot of availability left I'm afraid, but I'm happy to help you with advice on this area if you decide on the South coast - the kettle is always on if you're passing nearby too! This is us anyway ; www.gitegorvello.com
