Has anyone been to Eurocamp France?

Hi, we are thinking of trying out Eurocamp in France this year. We have never been abroad with our 3 children before. We are thinking of caravan accomodation (we have caravanned in the uk for a few years) so we know this would be ideal for us.

And also, we are contemplating driving/ferry crossing as opposed to flying.

We dont know of anyone who has ever been to any of these sites and would be grateful for any experiences - good AND bad.

Many thanks
Marie

Hi mariemarie, we went on our first holiday abroad last summer, to a Eurocamp site in Southern Brittany. We hired one of their tents. Our children were 6,5 and 3 (all girls), and we had a fabulous time. We booked a cabin on both ferry trips - Plymouth to Roscoff, 6 hours. The better of the two sailings, was the midnight one, we all slept for the whole trip!
It was great knowing that every day would be warmer then home, and it was mostly dry. The only downsde I can think of, was the lack of luxury, but that is not what we are about anyway. I booked the holiday on the phone, and the lady who helped me couldn't have been more helpful.
I would say Go for it!!

Thanks so much Mel. We too have 3 girls, aged 6,6 and 5. You sound pretty similar to us. We are certainly not looking for a luxury holiday. As long as things are clean and comfortable I'm sure we will have a good time.

The thing I am most looking forward to is hopefully getting some nice warm weather so that we can use the outdoor pools. Its not something we get to do much in this country. (Altho Ive also heard many people say that the weather in Brittany is not much different to UK). We were looking at western Brittany so that the drive down from the ferry isnt too long. Out of interest, how far from Roscoff were you, and how long did it take you to get there).

Sorry for all the questions, but hubby has kind of left this in my hands.

marie, if you search the travel and camping threads, you will find lots of advice, as loads of us mumsnetters take this type of holiday. I've always taken the DC (similar age to yours) and they love it

I acn only gareew ith Chippy!!! the hols in france we've been to ahve been with canvas and are:

  1. camping le Bois masson in St jean de monts, vendee (slightly warmer than Brittany! - it was very British and a bit too big for us! Had to drive to a beacha nd restauarant terrace was on a main road!
  1. camping Mane guerenhue in baden, Gulf of Morbihan Brittany. Lovely site, had 3 fishing lakes, fab pool complex, a filed of donkeys and some goats! restaruant was great and you could walk into the village wiht a restaurant, PO, butchers etc. Only draw back was a hill on site but I would go back. Had to drive to a beach. Great toys nearby.
  1. Camping Village la plage, le Guilvenic, Brittany. Great location as site joined the beach. Pool basic and restauarant /takeaway OK. Basic site wbut beach location is fab!
safe for kids.
  1. Camping Acapulco, St jean de Monts. Great site - fab pool, can walk to a local beach (drive to main resort one) . 5 mins walk from supermarket in small 'centre' with PO, bakers etc. restarant and other facilities were excelennt. Would go back. S Jean de Monts is a very good location - loads to do nearby.
  1. camping les deux fontaines, raguenes, brittany. Lovely site anwith great pool complex and a walk to the beach - about 10 - 15 mins. Restauarant and takeaway weren't very good but loads of free space, fields and play areas for DCs. Close to lovely towns and the next town had a fab restauarant.

I always preferred the overnight ferries too - with a cabin of course!! We always did Portsmouth - St malo and it was fantastic. Expensive but fantastic!!!

We always stay ina mobile as I like to have my own bathroom!!! And I've seen tents after a thunderstorm so I'm a woose!!!

Most companies are the same in general but sometimes the cheaper ones have older mobiles!! I go with canvas cos you can use Tesco vouchers with them and get free hols!

If you don't mind flying where you don't even need a hire car why not go here? We went last year and it was so good I've booked it again this year! It's on direct bus route from marco Polo so dead cheap and easy to get to/from airport!! I know it's not France but it's an option!! We found it VERY hard to leave the site - beach/pool!!!

Hello again, we stayed at La Raguenes Plage, near to no.5 that Leslaki mentioned. It is a lovely site, with an outdoor pool, play areas, and 5-10 minute walk to the great local beach, Again, no restaurant, but with a take-away serving fantastic moules-frites!!
The weather wasn't tropical, but was definately better than the UK. We were there for two weeks in August last year and had two rainy days. The rest were either hot and sunny or cloudy but warm - good for beach and pool.
The site was approx. 2 hours from Roscoff, we didn't want to go to far on our first trip abroad! Next time, we think we will venture a bit further to the Vendee, so will use some of the above advice!!

Thanks everyone.

My eurocamp brochure arrived this morning. My brother, his wife & children, plus my parents are all coming so I think its going to be easier to choose a site from the brochure rather than flicking around online.

But, even tho I had kind of made my mind up that it was going to be eurocamp, you have all helped to make me realise that I think this is going to be just what we're looking for.

Hard part now is choosing a site!! Decisions decisions eh!!

Thanks again!!
Marie
