We are going Easter weekend for 2 nights, we arrive Friday but plan to do the railway place on the Sat, so what can we do on the Friday and the Sunday.

do not do the yorvick! i went with my mum and sisters and it was such a waste of time and money. we walked around the town and went in the old shops and that was fun....

nailpolish · 02/03/2009 09:45

omg i love this place. its so beautiful and the grounds are wodnerful. you dont need a car - you can get a bus from the station

also

this is wonderful

also if you are feeling flash you could go to the races for the day - but it depends if they are running or not. york has its own racecourse or there are dozens of others in the surrounding area

have fun! i love york

museum gardens is nice for a stroll around - right in the centre (well, at the top) by the minster.

silverfrog · 02/03/2009 09:49

there are river cruises that run up and down as well, which can be nice if nice weather.

the castle museum is great for a potter around - has (well, it used to anyway) a great mock up of a street form times gone by, and then the museum itself has loads to see

silverfrog · 02/03/2009 09:51

there are the York Dungeons but it depends on how your ds is with stuff like that

wannaBe · 02/03/2009 09:55

castle museum is great. The street is still there - we went at the end of Jan.

Don't do the yorvick centre- waste of time and money.

silverfrog · 02/03/2009 09:58

I thought it must be still there, wannabe, as can't see why they'd get rid, but it is a long time since I went around - I was a student, so must have been 10+ years ago

funny, even then people were saying the Jorvik was a waste of time/money - you'd think over the years they would have sorted that out, wouldn't you?

branflake81 · 02/03/2009 16:25

I used to LOVE the Jorvik centre when I was a kid but haven't been for years. Maybe I just had low expectations!

fryalot · 02/03/2009 16:36

there are lots of things going on while you're there

Eeek · 02/03/2009 16:40

my kids loved Yorvik. Ghost tours are good. Minster is good and view from the tower is spectacular if you like heights. Walk round the walls pretending to be centurions. River cruise. If you have boys do Railway museum twice - we always have to. Drives me mad with boredom but they love it. The museum cafe is good btw

Clayhead · 02/03/2009 16:43

Dig is fantastic, we went last May and the kids still talk about it.

Our ds was 4 when we went and he enjoyed going into the crypt at the Minster.

Both dc really enjoyed Jorvik but it is lots of money for such a short time.

ABetaDad · 02/03/2009 16:51

I know York really well as I grew up near there. Here are a few free(ish) things to do:

Go in The Minster - especially if its raining. As a very small child the massive scale for me was truely awe inspiring and its an interesting place for adults too.

Also go for walk down The Shambles and look at the narow streets and funny overhanging houses - nice cafes/shops too if you need a sit down. Petergate is a good place for restaurants that are good but not too pricey.

Walk on the City Walls. the Daffodils will be out and you can see the city better up there. As a small child I liked the sense of being high up.

kickassangel · 02/03/2009 17:05

minster not really free any more, 'asks' for donations unless you're attending a service & i suspect there may be one or two things going on there easter weekend?

city wall are good, castle museam, just pottering around.
betty's nice but v expensive. on stonegate (big paved street, near minster)there's a taylor's tea shop which is the same co as betty's.
there's a good market in town (not sundays though), loads of architecture to look at.
erm ... lived there for 13 yrs & prob going back this summer, but never had kids there.
still miss it after 10 years, it's lovely.

dontdillydally · 03/03/2009 17:42

I fancy the Dig It - where is this? Also how long should we spend there?

OP posts:
Clayhead · 04/03/2009 20:20

Dig is in the centre and we spent about an hour and a half there.

springdaffs · 10/03/2009 19:36

My five year old loved the railway museum and the yorik viking centre

Hulababy · 10/03/2009 19:38

My 6y DD loved Yorvik, but it is probably a bit old for a 4yo.

She, and us, also enjoy afternoon tea in Bettys.

Can you still walk round the walls?

roisin · 10/03/2009 19:56

Another vote for Dig. We went when the children (mine and someone else's) were about 5, 7, 7, and 9.

They have guided sessions, so when you arrive you may need to hang around for a while waiting for the next one to start, but there are some activities you can do whilst you wait. We spent about 2 hours there I think.

A boat on the river was fantastic. We saw kingfishers! I've never seen them before in my life and we saw them on three different occasions that day

We also walked on the walls and went in the Minster.
