Scottish Mums - how grim is M&D's Theme Park?

The boys have been complaining that we haven't been to a theme park for years. So we are thinking about tagging on M&D's theme park to the end of our holiday in Scotland this year.

I love rollercoasters, but I hate long queues with chain-smoking, bare-chested, tattoed people! (This is what I found at Flamingo Land a couple of years ago.)

What's M&D's like? How does it compare with Alton Towers or Legoland?

Despite living about 6 miles from M&D's, I've never been. The DC have been (and enjoyed it) but that's no indication of how grim it is. Having said that, I've not heard anything bad about it from people who have been.

It's got to be better than Louden Castle theme park in Ayrshire. It really was the pits, and they charged full price for accompanying adults, even though I would rather eat dog poo than go on any sort of ride!

I've just remembered that M&D's has Amazonia and some sort of indoor crazy golf, and ten pin bowling, too, so there will be plenty to do for the day.

Thanks MrsMuddle.

We're not far from it. It's ok. My 2 are quite small for thier age so there's not alot they can get on.

There's an indoor play area, arcades, and quite a good bowling bit.

And amazonia's there too..reptiles and things that your boys may enjoy.

bigspender30 · 01/03/2009 14:59

Amazonia is good however in the actual theme park bit you will find the chain smoking tattoo brigade...

roisin · 01/03/2009 17:07

triffic!
thanks bigspender

I can just about see it from my house.

Its not bad for kids maybe 5-11? Certainly doesnt compare with Alton Towers/Chessington or anywhere like that. I dont even think its as big as lightwater valley or flamingo, however you can pay per ride, or get pass so at least you dont have to pya for non-riders.

There is a fair bit to do other than the theme park, amazonia, a nice pirae craze golf, soft play, wimpy, amusements, bowling alley and a huge loch/park with boats etc. There are a few "characters" about, I think its owned by a family of romany descent...

We took ds to Loudoun Castle last year and I actually thought it was better than M&D's - we went to a fathers day cars and wheels day which was great, although we did have to pay to get in, as you can use club card points it works out ok.

If you thinking of going to M&D's soon I think there are a few deals on - 2 4 1 on everything, details are on the web I think?

FelineOkay · 24/03/2009 10:37

Depends on the weather.

if it is sunny you will see bare-chested, tattoes people, we are Scottish it is what we do.

Sun comes out we strip.

FelineOkay · 24/03/2009 10:37

*tattoed

nickytwotimes · 24/03/2009 10:46

Loudon is much better now. It was done up recently.
Basically, they are theme parks in Britain. You get what you might expect.

Juliet - there's a media requests section. I think you have to pay.

upagumtree · 25/03/2009 17:10

I live 10 miles from M&D's. It doesnt really compare to Alton Towers tbh but when we take the kids they always have a great day out. The Gumtree family can often be found walking around the loch on many spring/summer evenings. So yip recommend it if you haven't been

SausageRoleModel · 25/03/2009 17:13

ask them how often they have to call out the local fire brigade because one of their rollercoasters is stuck. Again.

geordieminx · 25/03/2009 17:13

So sorry - I have been meaning to get back to you, but then your email disappeared in my inbox under a file of crap bits and pieces.

No cake for me, booked holidays last night, have 5 weeks to loose a stone

upagumtree · 26/03/2009 10:11

Roisin which area of scotland will you be holidaying in and when are coming up?

roisin · 27/03/2009 20:28

Hiya!
We are doing 5 days in/around Aviemore and Loch Garten; then a week on Skye; then 3 days on Muck; then possibly overnight near M&D's to placate the kids' complaints that we haven't been to a theme park for years!

I hope you have a lovely time. Remember though to take your avon skin so soft to repel the midges!

pointydog · 29/03/2009 13:58

dd1 went with guides once. She said it was very poor in terms of white knuckle rides. Not as good as flamingoland (nor blackppol obv). An ok day out though depending on teh age of your dc.

dd2 goes with guides this summer. I never want to have to go.

What about Landmark? Is it Landmark near Aviemore? An outdoor adventiure place, I think. Have heard others talk of it.

GrinnyPig · 29/03/2009 14:12

It's very small and doesn't compare at all with Alton Towers/Legoland etc.

Sausagerolemodel is right, the fire brigade do get called out when the roller coaster gets stuck

BUT my DDs always want to go when we visit relatives near there.

Do you have any Tesco Clubcard vouchers - you can use those.

geordieminx · 30/03/2009 19:25

there is an inn keepers lodge/toby carvery about 10 mins walk away that is very reasonable for rooms, with a nice bar/restaurant.

Macdog · 30/03/2009 19:36

We went to Landmark last year - big attractions are a high wire course and water boat slides.

I Liked Loudon Castle - lots to keep littler ones happy, not just rides for big people.

Not been to M&D's

All the places I mentioned are on the Tesco Clubcard deals - makes a big difference to the cost of your day out

sweetkitty · 30/03/2009 19:51

I live a mile from M&D's and we go quite a bit as it is on our door step, we go to the soft play a lot, we don't eat there and only go on the rides once a year or so. Amazonia is OK but quite expensive.

We tend to go for it opening during a school day therefore avoiding a lot of the ned element. It's really grim on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

I prefer Loundoun Castle TBH
