Has anyone ever taken a dog on a train for a long journey? Or is it possible to take them on a coach

For example Portsmouth to carlisle.

How difficult/easy was it? Did the dog settle?
Was there enough room for it to lie down and not get in the way?

I took two dogs on a train from Fort William to Winchester.
One did not travel well and was sick. Awful.
One was very well behaved though. We got through it eventually. We stopped in Glasgow, so they peed there. I don't think they ate much, as I was terrified they would poop/puke.
If your dog is well behaved, it would be ok,but better if you could stop over.
The journey was 14 hours, and the worst times were rush hours, but if you get a seat early would be ok.
Have travelled a lot with the non-puking dog by coach too. This is worse somehow. No room at all. For anyone! Plus it's more rickety iyswim?

So train might be better. There would be 1 adult, 2 childrena nd a dog plus luggage.
I did think about booking trains that wouldn't run over busy times

No dogs allowed on National Express.

I used to travel with our dog a lot and train is always the best option.

I will not tell you about the time me and a friend took two toddlers, two tents, two dogs, and tat for two weeks camping on the train. It would be cruel.

Book seats with a table, then the dog can lie down out of the way. Is it usually a scatty dog? If so then consider getting some mild doggy travel sickness stuff - it will make them a bit dozy too.

Well not so much scatty. It does like to "say hello" to everyone it meets, and chews a lot! Maybe if I book 4 seats with a table, then we can have the whole area to ourselves!

I won't tell you either about Euston to Preston whilst 8 mths pg with dog and case, and bloody Frank Carson and the woman off little house on the Praire !!

Too outlandish to remember !

Suffice to say our trip involved a visit to the hideously overpriced buffet car to buy minature bottles of brandy

One dog, with older children and less stuff, is not going to be a problem.

lulalullabye · 26/02/2009 08:34

Anarchy lol, I couldn't even do that !

abbout 10 yrs ago did Northallerton to Southampton with dog..no kids then but it worked well. Dog slept most of the way and when we chamged trains I walked her along to the end of the station platform to do her business. Underground was OK, just asked at the barrier and we were shown straight onto the platform. Good luck

I have travelled on a train when someone else had two dogs with them. One dog lay quietly, the other wanted to move about a lot. The major problems were - the train was crowded and they were sharing their table space, try to travel out of the busiest times. Also every child on the train (or so it seemed) wanted and come and pat the dogs /play with them .
