I am flying home to Aus for the summer with my son who will be 20mo at the time. It seems just about all flights leave late at night around 10pm from heathrow. I am flying on my own with him. Should I dare this or just find a hugely more expensive flight that leaves in daylight hours? what do you do with a toddler who whould be sleeping while checking in/boarding flights etc?

I have to say that in my considerable experience of seeing other people do this, it's horrid. Adding being tired to all the other things that are weird about flying (if you are little) seems to normally add up to tantrums and tears.

The lunchtime flight (12.30 ish) would mean that you are starting off on the right foot

moocowme - I am flying back home to Oz on Friday on the 10pm flight alone with my 22 mo DD. I chose the night flight as it had better connections and it meant I would arrive in Oz in the morning. I am bringing lots of things to keep her entertained, lots of snacks, stickers and her usual bedtime blanket, comfort toys etc. I have done this trip alone with her when she was 9 months and I managed fine. If your DS is tired, cant he just nap in the buggy and then you can check it in at the gate just before boarding. Just make sure you get it tagged at check-in. I think you will be fine :-)
