Where to go on holiday at 24 weeks pg at the beginning of May?

HerNameWasLola · 23/02/2009 10:39

DH and I are hoping to get away for our last holiday before our family of 2 (hopefully) becomes a family of 3 and we?d be really grateful for some wise MN suggestions

We?re limited as to when we can go by DH?s work. It will either have to be the first week of May when I should be 24 weeks pg or the first week in June when I should be 28 weeks.

This is my third pg. I?ve had 2 mc?s before this pg, the last in April 08 at 17.5 weeks. So far [touch wood] this pg has been fine and the doctors seem confident so there?s no reason we shouldn?t go but I wonder if I would find it easier to relax at 24 weeks somehow. It?s taken us a lot to get to this point and we don't want to do anything silly, but I think a break would do us both a lot of good.

We?d like some sun, sea and general relaxation. We both tend to get quite depressed if it rains on holiday, so staying in this country is a no-no. It may well sound silly but I?m a bit nervous about going at 28 weeks.

We?re thinking Med, but will it be warm enough at the beginning of May? We?ve been to a place called Kalkan in Turkey a few times which we love, but never as early as the beginning of May, and I?ve never been on holiday pg so I really don?t know!

All advice/suggestions gratefully received

If you are happy to travel abroad and love Kalkan I would go back there. As you know it is not particularly buggy friendly, so you probably won't return for a few years!
Kalkan is warm in early May (early 20s) but then again, my parents caught a heatwave at that time a couple of years back. Certainly this part of Turkey will be warmer than most other places on the Med. The sea/unheated pools will be too cold to swim. The Happy Hotel's pool is heated during low season, so this could be a good choice. (You must swim whilst pregnant it is great!). Anyway, good luck and hope you find/have a great holidaym

sobanoodle · 23/02/2009 18:05

What about majorca or the Algarve ? Again sea not mega warm but there should be a feeling of real warmth in the air before it gets too hot further into the season.

HerNameWasLola · 23/02/2009 18:14

Thanks for the suggestions JuliaL & sobanoodle, someone also suggested we look at Crete so I'm off for a surf round some websites in a minute.

It's funny that you mention The Happy Hotel, I saw it on a website yesterday but I've never noticed it when we've been there, whereabouts is it? The real problem with looking for anywhere else is that DH and I are both in love with Mahal - we'd stay at Villa Mahal if we won the lottery, but so far it's just been day trips!

We stayed at Galazio Kima in Crete. Very relaxing and at the start of May you will have the beach practically to yourselves.

Also transfer time 20 mins from Chania which is a lovely city - well worth a visit.

giantkatestacks · 23/02/2009 18:17

I went to Antigua at that stage of my first pregnancy - all inclusive. It was great and direct too from here so not changing or anything.

Have also had some really good value and yet gorgeous villas in Tuscany/Umbria with Ownersdirect.co.uk.

If you went somewhere like that it would be warm and theres lots of hill towns to see and restaurants to enjoy with leisurely lunches and dinners - impossible with dcs.

OOOh also had v. romantic break in Oia on Santorini. www.simplytravel.co.uk

We went to Lanzerote last year at the end of april - it was 25-30 every day, but breezy so it wasnt too hot. We stayed in an aparthotel called Rubimar, its in a really new, smart Marina development, Cafe del Mar, Chanel, Hugo Boss and lots of lovely resturants - 15 min walk into Playa Blanca itself.

If you are after a "posher" hotel (we had ds with us) then the Princess Yaiza gets fab reviews.

giantkatestacks · 23/02/2009 18:28

But surely you could go to crete or majorca or the canaries etc with kids? And in fact probably will be going to some of them.

Santorini's a good one though [daydreams]

mosschops30 · 23/02/2009 18:30

Cyprus would be lovely at the beginning of May, I went at the end of March last year and it was lovely and hot (and I love the heat). Paphos is nice, and Id recommend the St. George hotel (Thomson Platinum).

Or you could try Menorca which is geared for families, no rowdy nitespots and we have also had good weather there in May.

HerNameWasLola · 23/02/2009 18:58

Smallorange am in love. And am holding you responsible.

gks would love love love to go to antigua, but think the bank manager might have a fit if we do it now! Plus not sure it's the sort of place to try on a budget, would want to do it 'properly' iykwim. Will def look at ownersdirect though, thanks!

Thanks mosschops and geordieminx, cross posts before.

Crete is curretly the front runner, but I'll be checking out Santorini and Pahpos after dinner (sadly only virtually ). I would hope that if Paphos is hot in May Crete should be too, as it's slightly further south...? Not so keen on Lanzarote, but then my only experience of it is from a cheapie week with some girlfriends while we were at university, so probably not quite the holiday DH and I would have there!

Went to Santorini back-packing about ten years ago. Loved it. Would love to go back.

Currently trying to persuade Dh it makes much more sense to go for 2 weeks than one

Lola - some pics of the new marina. [http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=playa%20blanca%20marina&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi here]]

It was full of couples/families, we ddnt see a single pissed up person or "lucky lucky" man the whole time we were there

geordieminx · 23/02/2009 20:09

here

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/02/2009 20:13

We went to mexico when I was 24 weeks to an island off th coast called Cozumel.

It was fantastic - snorkelling while pregnant is just a lovely feeling!

Hersetta · 24/02/2009 09:54

I went to the maldives when I was 24 weeks pregnant - fantastic last pre-baby holiday.

smallorange · 24/02/2009 13:27

we went to Crete at the beginning of May last year and it was hot enough to lie on the beach, although a bit breezy sometimes. You would need a warm jumper for the evenings and some jammies. It was much hotter by the time we left in mid May.

HerNameWasLola · 25/02/2009 07:15

Thanks all so much for the tips, no time to reply properly now. Spoke to Simpson Travel yesterday, the Galazio Kima is shut til the end of May & if we want to do 10 days the transfer is 3.5 - 4hrs as have to use a different airport. So am going to look at long haul, even if only to rule it out.

Smallorange glad to hear you've been to Crete in earlyt May, that's reassuring.

Must go to work... back later!

Just wanted to add - definitely go at 24 weeks not 28. 27 weeks is the limit for a lot of insurance companies and personally I wouldn't go without insurance. We went to Menorca in May when I was pg with dd2 (26 wks) and had a lovely time.

JuliaL · 25/02/2009 12:32

Another suggestion! Assos in Kefalonia is absolutely gorgeous. Very pretty, very quiet but with everything you want for a relaxing romantic stay. It is where I got engaged. Been there lots in ealy May (to eat, to swim, to relax.. never to stay alas). The bay is very sheltered, so forms a perfect tranquil swimming pool. I actually found the Ionian islands warmer than the more southerly Crete and Rhodes as not so prone to the wind. I know Greek Options have the Apollonia. If interested, happy to look and suggest more.
Can understand your being in love with the Mahal in Kalkan. But as it is just up the road from my parents apartment I couldn't justify staying there, even if I didn't have two boys in tow. Am dreaming of getting a babysitter and slipping off to dinner there 'though. Sorry, don't know the Happy, but could look up location on enjoy kalkan website. Hard work planning hols isn't it!

smallorange · 25/02/2009 12:51

I'm surprised that Galazio Kima is shut til end of May They do have a lovely private villa just along the beach with a private swimming pool(on website) . We were thinking of renting it but then I got pregnant with no. 3!
We actually flew to Heraklion Airport rather than Chania because we were flying direct from Glasgow, picked up a car (Simpson arranged it) and drove to Kalives - it took 2.5 - 3 hours and we had two kids with us. Twas fine.

You'd think they would be more helpful in these credit crunched times. Surely they need the business!

HerNameWasLola · 26/02/2009 20:21

Julia I've been looking at Assos and also Fiskado in Kefalonia, I went there about 8 years ago, a couple of weeks after I met my DH in fact - he wasn't invited But I think he'd love it and we will definitely go there at some point. Thank you for reminding me about it!

smallorange I was surprised when they said about Galazio Kima as well, apparently the owners have told them it won't be available until 27th May for some reason. Maybe a refurb? Though seems a funny time to do it... Really like the look of Chania though, neither of us have ever been to Crete and it's definitely on the list now, so thank you

Having looked at A LOT of websites and brochures over the past few day, I think we have more or less decided to go back to Kalkan! but thank you for at least trying to broaden our holiday horizons. We just love it there so much, we tend to stay at a hotel called the Mediteran which I would happily reccommend to anyone. The more we have looked at other places the less we are convinced that there is anywhere we would like as much within our price bracket. And as Julia said, it's not particularly buggy friendly, so this may be our last visit for a while! I hope we are doing the right thing! - Maybe I'll post on here again in May and let you know

Crete is a really good option with a wee one- so maybe next year, eh.
