How much money for 12hours in Singapore Airport

DH, 8 month old DS and I have a 12 hour stopover in Singapore airport while we wait for flight to Australia. We have booked the transit hotel and will pay on credit card but I have no idea how much cash we might need while we are there. We are there between 8am and 8pm so will definately need to buy a couple of meals (although will have food for DS with us already) and we are not planning on going on a spending spree so what do you think? Would £50 be enough?

I think they take sterling if you are staying within the confines of the airport. Leastways, when we were there last year and ds3 had just vomited down his clothes as the plane came in to land, we had no difficulty paying for some new clothes for him in the airport and it was certainly not an expected expense. If not sterling, then credit cards certainly.

Or are you not meaning that? Are you simply wanting to know how much to budget for?

Oh I had not even thought we would be able to pay for things in Sterling. Thats a great tip. We are not planning on leaving the airport so its just things like buying water, lunch and any other little expenses like a new toy/clothes for DS. As I have no idea how much things cost in Singapore also like to have some idea of a budget too

They will take Australian dollars there as well.

Any airport is usually quite pricey, IME - but I've never been in Singapore airport for long enough to have more than a drink.

Why are you needing to budget for it?

It's worth knowing that Singapore Airport has a swimming pool, so pack your swimming costumes in you carry on luggage. towells shampoo etc included in the entrance price. You can also take a free tour of Singapore if you have a big enough gap to fill.

look here

I cannot be sure about being able to pay with sterling, but you can definitely pay by credit card. Re cost of things, well we had to buy ds3 a pair of designer jeans and a designer t-shirt as that was all there was (apart from a gorgeous touristy t-shirt that was even more expensive). It was a case of needs must with us. I am not in the habit of buying designer clothes for my children so I know the cost was quite high, but I think this was mitigated by the fact that the exchange rate was favourable at the time.

Sorry, I am waffling, not being much help here, am I? The only sensible thing I can offer is that you might not need as much food as you think. You get a meal just before you land, and you will definitely get another meal when you take off again, and, having sat on a plane for 13 hours prior to landing in Singapore, you probably won't feel that hungry much of the time. I know we were there about 4 hours and made do with drinks and snacks.

thanks for all the info. Basically we are flying on Friday and its only just dawned on me that we have no singapore cash ordered. Given that we are only there for 12 hours I really did not know if we would be able to get buy on credit cards alone or if we would need a bit of csah as we will probably want to buy bottles of water, lunch etc. We are not coming back via Singapore we did not want any left over money so wanted an idea on how much we might spend. I do not but designer clothing either so want to keep the spend minimal if we can

I am sure you can manage on credit cards and if you happen to have some sterling, that may help too. Have fun!

The transit hotel is great. Quiet, very clean and modern, be sure to book a cot... and free access to the hidden away swimming pool since you're staying at the hotel. A must do. Took 8mth swimming there and all clean and doable. If you're in the new terminal (there's a branch of the hotel in two terminals), it's right by the 24 hour cinema too! Major currencies are fine, as is card. Check out the butterfly and outdoor cactus garden too. Clothes are pricey, but food is about average for an airport. There is a supermarket near the upstairs restaurants in terminal 3 if you get stuck for baby supplies. £50 should be enough for food, but it depends on what you want really. If you're flying SIA you can get discounts.
Wish i were going!!! If you haven't already, check out the [[http://www.changiairport.com/changi/en/index.html changi airport] website.

brilliant thanks for the low down on the hotel. I am pleased about the swimming pools as I think we will deserve a bit of playtime.

£50 should be enough for food and a little shopping. Food is significantly less expensive than in UK - but the Singapore dollar has strengthened greatly against the pound in recent months, so whilst still cheaper, not as cheap as before.

Changi airport will accept credit card.

missmelly · 26/02/2009 22:25

Just use your credit card if you get stuck. I was there on a 2hr transist and needed to buy some tampons asap, didnt have any cash so just put them on my credit card. No problems. Enjoy your trip
