Ok - so talk to me about how expensive France is / isn't and if it is worth going this year because of the Euro being so bad?

We were supposed to be going to Brittany this year which will be our first holiday abroad in ages.We were really excitedbut we have been advised not to go by lots of people because of the state of the Euro and because of how expensive it is supposed to be. Would you stay in the UK this year because of the euro? And roughly how much do the basics cost in France (eg pint of milk, loaf of bread, pint of beer etc?) We don't want to make an expensive mistake so any advice would be fab! Thanks

In our local bakery, a baguette costs 85 cts and a loaf of sliced wholemeal costs 1.65 euros. Probably cheaper in the supermarkets.

6 litres of UHT milk for about 3.60 (IIRC, it's usually lumped in with the supermarket shop).

I don't know about beer, neither of us drink this in cafés.

I always felt that with eating out, the numbers you see in Euros were about the same as the numbers in Pounds. So eating out is now not as much of a bargain as it was a few years ago.

Alcohol is pretty cheap.

If you want to check out prices, you can have a look at an online supermarket in the area that you are planning to visit.

My in-laws live there so we go about once or twice a year. We went at christmas and found it much more expensive than when we had been before. It is pretty much a pound to the euro so a pretty basic packet of two sandwiches in the service station on the way there was 4 euros, which would have been £2.50 but is now 4 quid. Petrol is 1.29 euros per litre. Drinks and things in cafes not too bad I suppose but then I am comparing rural france to London prices. We normally bring back a car full of wine and french food but didnt bother bringing anything this year.

I would say yes it is much more expensive than it would have been before but if you shop around and are careful you will be fine. If you are going by ferry stock up at supermarket in Dover for basics.
