What car seat to buy if you have no car?

Baby is due in June. We don't have a car, have no plans to ever buy a car. I have been reading that not all car seats fit in all cars, but I will mostly be using the seat in taxis. But really usually taking the bus!

Can anyone tell me if there is a standard car seat I can buy? I am going to locally owned pram shop that claims to have expert advice this weekend, but was hoping MN could help me!!

Could you not call all taxi companies and find out which has a car seat and then use them?

My dh does this if going to train station with ds. he calls in advance and they out car seat in. Would be a lot cheaper than forking out for a car seat that might not fit into whatever car taxi is.

Get something that can be strapped in with a seatbelt, rather than an isofix seat.

The Which? website will have a list of the best ones, but if you're only using it occasionally you probably won't want to spend too much.

Oh, and don't get anything too heavy if you're going to be carrying it any distance - once your baby hits 20lb you'll struggle!!!

Yes, I could do that. But from what I understand, if I need one right away, i.e. don't prebook, could take ages to get to me.

Also, I am hoping to be able to use it in the inlaws cars as well as on the plane to take the baby to the US in November.

We got a britax that fits with a seat belt
I think the non isofix britax and maxi cosi ones will fit pretty much any car

Tee > most of the travel system type car seats are ideal, the maxi cosi is popular and I would imagine fairly universal. That should last you though until 9 months ( approx depending on the size of your dc!) Which would give you enough time to decide how often you use it and whether it's worth getting the next size up....

Go with one that fits your pram (if you're getting one) and then as s/he gets heavier it's less of a problem, as you can get out of the car/ off the areoplane and away you go!!

(FWIW we did buy a car seat second hand for dc2 but only after visiting the family selling and talking with the family at length about it's history, for the amount of time you're going to use it this may be the way to go, as you would have as much history with a rental seat!)
