just seen the thread in lone parent and seen that a couple fo parents travelling with their children have been challenged for having different surnames.

Will my parents (diff surname to my dd's) be ok taking them on holiday with just their passports?

You'd maybe be best giving them a letter to take too, just saying that they have permission to take your DC.

my MIL is taking ds to France at Easter (she has a different name to us) I was going to send a letter giving permission to be on the safe side

I think they need some sort of notarised letter of authorisation from yourself. I'm sure I read that somewhere .

You also ought to give them a letter giving them authority to consent to emergency medical treatment etc., just in case. No reason this couldn't be the same letter.

When DH's parents took DS to EuroDisney this year, we sent a letter along with them authorising them to take him out of the country. It wasn't notarised but I'm sure would have been adequate in the absence of any questionable circumstances.
