Looking for a hotel for 5 days, wondering if any of you have stayed in a nice quiet hotel but not far from the heart of it all. (if there is such a thing)
Or any good hotels that you would recommend?

I dont think there are any - i you're near the action it will be noisy... We stayed at waldorf astoria with a 2 year old and it was fine.

With or without children? We stayed in the Royalton once (had a special deal) and it was pleasant and central and quiet, but it's achingly stylish -- the sort of place where we felt that we clashed with the design scheme . And I think they'd self-combust if a child set foot in the place. And I suspect it's pretty expensive if you don't have a special deal.

No kids will be staying home so looking for a quiet hotel where we can catch up on sleep and shop too...

Well, if you're achingly stylish the Royalton was nice.

DH and I stayed at the mansfield a couple of years ago. It was within walking distance of most things, but in a quiet side street (just hotels).Very small room tho'

We stayed in Hotel Thirty Thirty in November and in was fine and a reasonable price. I think wherever you stay in Manhattan it will be a bit noisy. The best thing about it was the bed, it was so comfortable.

We stayed in The Waldorf Astoria last May and it was fabulous. Old world charm and glamour. The flowers in the lobby are amazing. It is a little shabby in places but it adds to the charm and history. We took the DDs but would return with or without them. Beautiful hotel.

Another vote for the Waldorf. If you're on a high floor the noise is vastly reduced (through true for most places - maybe not Times Square )

Depends on budget obviously. We also stayed in the Thirty Thirty, which was fairly quiet from my memories, and was quite stylish, but fairly 'no frills' on the whole. That said, we spent most of the time out and about, so it wasn't much of an issue. If I was taking kids I would probably look for a hotel with slightly bigger rooms and a swimming pool, but if not and you don't want to spend too much then I would def recommend it.

We stayed at The Library Hotel, a boutique hotel that is very reasonably priced and quite quirky.

Also, an amazing cheap boutique hotel was Casablanca Hotel, around the corner from Times Square. The rooms are all done in Moroccan style and the best bit is that you get complimentary breakfasts, homemade cookies throughout the day and wine and cheese in the evening. Not bad for $200 for a room. I would definitely check them both out.

Have fun and don't miss Century 21 and Filene's Basement!

The Muse - great hotel.
Found the Waldorf to be a bit old and fading and worn out - and left and checked into the Muse and have stayed there several times since.

The Algonquin - close to Times Square but in a quiet area

We just stayed at The Marcel in the East Village, I think it's on 23rd between 2nd and 3rd but don't quote me on that. It's really lovely but don't go for the basic rooms, we went for one up and it was modern and stylish with a great bar. It's on a quiet street in a VERY funky area. Perfect. It's also very well priced for NYC
