Las Vegas

Doing some very very early prelimanary research

My sister is getting married in 2010, prob May half term, in Las Vegas. they are looking at staying at the Bellagio and having the ceremony there - but still looking around at moment so not confirmed or anything.

DD will be 8y at the time, and she is to be bridesmaid

We have never beed to Las vegas at all, so now nothing about it yet. DH, me and DD will be looking for accomodation, central but not too expensive - want to be able to still go away for a week or two in the summer holidays too!

Have you been? With a child? Where did you stay? What kind of price was it for a week?

We took our then 3 year old back in the 90s and stayed at the Luxor.

I don't know if they still have the same rules but you never used to be able to arrive on a Saturday.

I looked at a lot of the hotels last year thinking we might like to go again and they are horrendously expensive now, unless you go for somewhere like Circus Circus, which tends to feature in Virgin's brochures.

I think DD would probably love Circus Circus!

we got married at the Luxor in 2005! dd1 was 18mths, ss was 5, had a lovely time. Have also stayed at the opposite end of strip at Stratosphere, also a fine hotel. Vegas is quite kid friendly, although I did note that the Bellagio is not unless your staying there but that may have changed. Places like Excalibur which link onto Luxor and NYNY are all kid friendly, plus you can get the monorail from the MGM Grand which is over the road, to carry you up and down the strip. We didn't stay for the week, only 5 days, then went onto Florida for honeymoon, so not sure of prices for week. When I stayed at Stratosphere on the hop (backpacked into town and crawled round hotels till one took us in stupid idea in vegas) it was $35 a night, but was Tue-Thur in Jan, so not 'peak'. Most of the hotels have great websites and you can usually get a good deal booking direct (once booked Ballys in Atlantic City direct for a double room and got upgraded to a suite upon arrival !) www.lasvegaskids.net try this site for more info.

I reckon DD is going to love the whole Las Vegas thing!

We are going to Vegas in August!!

Not been before, we were looking at Mexico and DH was umming and rring about the flights and when we came to book them they had gone up over £300, so Vegas it now is.

bellavita · 18/01/2009 20:55

We are staying at the Monarch Grand Vacation Cancun Resort (thought if we couldn't go to Mexico, then I would have a little bit of it themed into Vegas)

We stayed (briefly) at the Luxor last March with 3dcs. It was fine and fairly inexpensive, with an enormous room. Food in the hotel was cheap and plentiful. We walked from there to the Bellagio, although August will be hot. Have a good time !

bellavita · 18/01/2009 21:16

katsh, yes that is the only downside of going in August, the heat.

We had no choice really, with DS1 being in Yr7 now, we would not want him to miss any time out of school. Also, the two weeks that we have booked, the flights through virgin were cheaper than the end of July or end of August. We are also paying for a 3rd adult now as DS1 will be 12 in June.

Virgin are the only UK carrier who fly direct into Las Vegas so they can basically charge what they like!.

Bellagio is going to cost a lot of money per night (its one of the most expensive hotels in Las V); also the hotel generally speaking is not very child friendly at all. That needs to be borne in mind if you were to stay there.

Have a look at somewhere central like Paris, Treasure Island or the Venetian. All those may be more reasonable in terms of cost.

There is a monorail that runs I believe from the Luxor to the hotels more centrally located on the Strip. There is certainly a monorail that runs from the MGM Grand north up towards the other hotels.

Another possible for you is the MGM Signature which is both a non gaming and non smoking facility (its an ideal place for families). These are well appointed 1 or 2 bedroom apartments. We stayed at the Signature a couple of years back and enjoyed it very much; made a nice change to get away from the madness of the casinos (and some of them can be very smoky as well).

Another vote for Signature @ MGM. Fabulous rooms.
