A friend of mine went and stayed at the Newport Bay. It's a 3 star. SHe liked it so I've just booked a few days there myself.

pinkkoala · 18/01/2009 15:31

i have stayed at santa fe, newport bay and sequoia lodge. i would definately reccomend sequoia lodge and have a montana room.

gemmiegoatlegs · 18/01/2009 15:37

we stayed in seqoia lodge last year, rooms were v. big and comfortable and also not too far from all the action, a nice pleasant walk around the lake or you can get the shuttle bus.

bluesky · 18/01/2009 16:01

Love Newport Bay

Santa Fe too, slightly longer walk from there, and no floor space in the rooms, whereas Newport Bay had more room space.

GossipMonger · 18/01/2009 16:02

Talk me through your whole trip please as ds1 is DYING to go.

How are you getting there?
Is it VERY expensive?
Is there just crap to eat?
How long are you going for?

SugaryBits · 18/01/2009 16:09

We stayed in the Dream Castle, just outside the park. It was OK but nothing special. It was 4 but no where near British 4 standards! People we met there were staying at the Newport Bay and hotel was much nicer and rooms much bigger.

Andthentherewerethree · 18/01/2009 16:12

we've stayed in the disney hotel at the gates, newport bay, santa fe and the wild west one (forgotten whats its called now) and our fave was the newport bay, it was lovely to have plenty of room to spread out and the use of a pool and right near the village so very convenient for night time.

SugaryBits · 18/01/2009 16:14

GossipMonger- in answer to some of your questions... we went by eurostar, reasonably priced.
Once you are there it is very expensive, everything from souvenirs to food. It is mainly crap to eat, unless you can afford to splash out on the very expensive restaurants. Even the cheapest junk options are still fairly pricey. We found McDonalds the cheapest, obviously not ideal to eat there every day! We discovered that buying water/crisps in train station shop was wayyy cheaper than buying snacks in the park. Finally, we went to 5 days- too long! Lots of walking and very tiring for the kids so 3 days would have been enough.

GossipMonger · 18/01/2009 16:15

Thanks SB!

islandofsodor · 18/01/2009 16:15

Newport Bay was reccomended by our travel agent (independant).

It was lovely. If your budget stretches I would definately go for that one.

christywhisty · 18/01/2009 16:18

We stayed outside which was only 10 minutes on the metro, which from what I can gather it is quicker than some of the hotels in the park and cheaper.Sol Inn Paris Bussy
There are a few hotels here just over the road from the station. The train takes right to the entrance of Disney World.

VaginaShmergina · 18/01/2009 16:22

Newport bay is a must.

We like many others helped ourselves to a bit too much continental breakfast each morning and made that our lunch

Definately pre-book a character dinner at Mickeys diner. The characters come round to your tables and are yours exclusively for photos as trying to have your photo taken with them in the park turns out to be a bit of a bun fight to say the least. This costs about the same as what your dinner would cost you anyway and you might just as well get to see the kids faces !

Do Buffalo Bills Wild West adventure..... such good yee haaaaaaaa fun.

Take or buy a water bottle for each of you and fill it at the water fountains around the park and before you leave your romm so you are not continually forking out for drinks.

However the whole thing has got very expensive because of the euro/pound situation. 2 years ago we paid £520 for our break and that was everything inc, travel, hotel, breakfast, park passes. This year, same break is £920 !! Needless to say we will not be going.

blametheparents · 18/01/2009 16:36

Went a New Year and agree that the exchg rate is making it seem very expensive.
A beer was £7
In Mickeys Diner a kids meal (Small main course, drink and pudding) came in at £16
Having said that, we ha a great time.
Good money saving tip for us was to take snacks with us from home, we also took cartons of apple juice, packets of raisins, dried apricots etc. Worked out well as at least we didn't have to buy loads of extras.

islandofsodor · 18/01/2009 17:24

Book breakfast in the park. You get in early and it is easier to make up aa packed lunch from it.

pointydog · 18/01/2009 17:27

It is expensive, gossip.

We are going for 3 nights in February, flying from Edinburgh, staying in a 3 star hotel and are paying £1500 . That does also include breakfasts, theme park tickets for four days and airport transfers.

But food does indeed cost a fortune there.

gemmiegoatlegs · 19/01/2009 08:05

and the food is mostly awful. breakfast is fine but the only nice place we had a meal was the steakhouse in disney village.

Doodle2U · 19/01/2009 08:11

We stayed in the Disney Hotel. Breakfast excellent. Every other meal, we ate out so cannot comment.

The absolute best thing about this hotel was the small door on the side which leads straight into the main park! Whilst everyone else treks or busses back to their hotel, the Disney Hotel guests just nipped into this side door, up in the lift and straight in to bed! Great if you've stayed up to watch the late parade!

pinkkoala · 19/01/2009 12:12

we did self drive on the channel tunnel, last time we went it was nov 07. it cost us 550 pound for the hotel, tickets and to take the car, breakfast was included. it is expensive to eat so i would reccomend doing the half board plus option when you book trip as it works out cheaper and you can eat in a variety of different places. we did 4night/5 day with a free night. take a kettle as there weren't any in the sequoia hotel rooms but you could hire them, we took a travel kettle.

the gift shops are expensive and kids always want everything they see.

for sandwiches or baguettes there is a new york deli syle place in disney village which has some good meal deals for a lunch or lite tea.

rainforest cafe has good atmosphere but expensive food.

pinkkoala · 19/01/2009 12:15

forgot to say we also took snacks like crisps, fruit, biscuits, cereal bars and bottled water and squash to make up our dd drinks as they were expensive there, you can take as much as you want if you take the car, we have driven every time and we have now been 5 times now.

annaje · 20/01/2009 14:03

Is it expensive to eat in the Hotel in the evening?

OP posts:
pointydog · 20/01/2009 18:22

If you can go in term time, do it. Loads cheaper.

pinkkoala · 21/01/2009 08:53

it works out more expensive to pay every night in sequoia lodge hotel, ther are two restuarants, a buffet and a table service.

it is much cheaper to pre book half board plus meal plan when you book hols as you can then eat in a variety of different places in other hotels, disney village and disney parks.

the hotel will be cheaper in term time an parks are less busy.

there is a nice bar in sequoia lodge but alcoholic drinks are expensive, but cocktails are lovely.

mrshammond · 21/01/2009 09:13

We stayed in the New York which was lovely but a bit "grown up". In hind sight would have stayed at the Newport Bay as it seems so popular.
